Share Your Story Being both a "Cop and a Christian"

"God has given each of you some special abilities, Be sure to use them to help each other, passing on to others God's many kinds of blessings" - 1 Peter 4:10 (LB)

Share here your personal testimonies about how God has helped you to reach out to either a citizen or to a fellow officer and how you were able to share the "Good News" of Jesus Christ with others.

I served for 10 years as a police officer and SWAT team member. I am now a Pastor and Police Chaplain in Portage, MI

When someone asked me how I could reconcile being a cop and being a Christian, I replied, "I don't know how you can be cop and NOT be a Christian, considering all the things we witness day in and day out."

I Have been with the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office (FL) since 1986, starting as a Sheriff's Explorer. Becoming a certified Law Enforcement Deputy in 1989, I started my career with included all the nicky-neat stuff - SWAT, Dive Team, etc. For almost 13 years, I did talks, water safety presentations, first aid and CPR, as well as pediatric safety for a local hospital.

However, on September 21, 2006, tragedy struck our family as we were preparing to go out for a family walk in the neighborhood.

Somehow, our two youngest, Olyvia (4) and Katy (15mos) got out of the front door without being seen and made their way to the nearby retention pond. Within a matter of 1½ to 2 minutes the girls had gone from being in their bedroom to being at the pond. Katy had fallen in the pond, as we were searching for her and Olyvia. When the girls were not found inside, Robyn went out the front door and immediately saw Olyvia who told her Katy had fallen in.

Katy was immediately found and CPR was begun. She was flown by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office Air Rescue to Lawnwood Regional Medical Center (Fort Pierce), where the extraordinary and capable staff helped to regain her heartbeat. Katy was then flown by Air Rescue to St. Mary’s Nicklaus Children’s Hospital (West Palm Beach) where she received the best of care.

The next day, due to many complications following the intake of the pond water, Katy flew home to be with the Lord. Present was her family and many close friends. God provided the family with abundant blessings as a result from this horrible tragedy. Support was amazing, as was evident in Katy’s Celebration of Life Service at Westside Baptist Church. We as a family have pledged to continue these blessings to others, in Katy’s name.

The Mary Kathryn Church Memorial Foundation, or The Katy Foundation, hopes to prevent childhood injuries, especially drowning, be an advocate in similar situations, and do all we can to ease the pain and suffering for others experiencing child death.

Searching for information on the web about Christian Law Enforcement officers, I came across Mike Dye and PeaceKeepers. I believe this is a culmination of many things and I am absolutely sure God has led me here and beyond.
