Breaking Strongholds on the Job!
Let's first take a look at Ephesians 6:10; " 10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. 19Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should"
I would like to place into bold highlights a few of these outstanding Bible verses as found in Ephesians 6 for further discussion; In verse 11 the verse states;11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes So, what exactly does this verse mean? In short, it means that you can not stand up against the evil in this world alone, which translates to "the devils schemes", and without having a strong level of spiritual maturity.
Part of obtaining spiritual maturity means that you need to spend time reading God's word (which is the Bible) daily. It means that you need prayer partners and strong Christian fellowship with other believers, which means that you should belong to a Church. Did you know that the word "Church" comes from the Greek word; "ekklesia" which translates into “assembly" or "congregation." It is used to refer to a group of persons that are organized together for a common purpose and who meet together. It is properly utilized to describe the Church as "the body of Christ". Just as you cannot survive if your head was disconnected from your body, likewise, your heart and mind, cannot be disconnected from the spiritually body that is the church.
So, don't think that you can stay out of church and still have Godly strength and character. That would be like an alcoholic trying to go sober without the help of family or an AA group.
In verse 12 we see some specific writing regarding "spiritual warfare". The Bible states; "For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."
Simply stated this is a key verse found in the Bible to describe satan's attacks against us (Christian or otherwise) and one in which every peace officer should understand to the fullest. As police officer's on the job, we see our work as one in which we are found in the middle of a war between "good and evil". Every officer regardless of what religious rearing from atheist to believer will confirm that we as police officers see both "good and evil" in our jobs. Additionally, they will agree that as police officers we can find ourselves right in the middle of this “war” between ‘good and evil’.
Unfortunately, most police officers while recognizing this concept do not fully understand it and as a result, the consequences of failing to understand it are all too great. Once the devil begins to play his "schemes" (as found in verse 11) against these "warriors of good". (Read Romans 13:1-7) Without a strong spiritual foundation (and spiritual maturity) satan's schemes will be manfestiated against the officer and in turn leads to a number of issues that we are all too familiar with. Here are a few listed here;
our divorce rate is 60-70% higher than the national average
our alcoholism rate is 2 times the national average
our domestic violence rate is among the highest of all professions
our suicide rate is 3 times the national average
Personally, I love what is written in verses 14 and 15; "14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.
As Christian peace officers, we should walk proudly and with our head held high and have the full knowledge that we are a child of the highest King and as such we should view ourselves as "ambassadors" for the Lord. Additionally, we should view our jobs as peace officers as a gift from the Lord in which we are expected to do "good" (Read Romans 13:4 " 4For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer") When we can understand these verses in it’s fullest, we can begin to stand tall, without fear, bold in our faith, and know that we can bring a peace about our beat (area of responsibility) no matter where we are assigned; patrol, investigations, community relations, School Resource Officers, training, etc. these two verses should give you the authority and understanding to police with Godly authority.
Verse 18; 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.
Prayer. For many, prayer can be confusing but prayer is simply your conversation with God. It does not need to be formal, rather it simply needs to come from the heart. Our instructions for prayer can be found in Matthew 6:5; "5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.
Some Christians refer to the following as breaking strongholds. A ‘stronghold’ can be any area of sin. It can be an internal sin in your own life such as pride, greed, drugs, alcohol, or pornography
Or it may be in external sin such as a physical location like a strip club, bars, drug houses (or street corners), or maybe even a city block.
As law enforcement officers we should be praying daily for these strongholds not only in your own life (or the life of your partner) but also in your area of responsibility. I can personally testify as to what I have seen God do with the prayers that I have uplifted to Him in my various assignments, as well as to a peace and calm that He will install over your beat area whenever you pray specifically. As a peace officer please do not discount the power of prayer. It is one of the necessary tools that you can have on your "tool belt" in order to combat the evil that we encounter on the job.
As God deals primarily with individuals, we do see throughout Scripture that He also deals with regions. He gave Abraham a geographical region. He foretold the regions in which Jesus would minister. He sent prophets to certain cities, such as Jonah to Nineveh, and some prophets to the Northern tribes and some specifically to the Southern tribes. Some prophets prophesied against cities such as Babylon and Tyre. The Great Commission ordered the Apostles to go to certain cities and regions. We can clearly see that God is concerned about geographical regions because of His concern and love for the people that live in those areas. In short, you are a "gatekeeper" for God in your specific city, county, or state.
But how do I do this you ask? It is simple. Here are some examples;
Pray specifically for His protection and guidance over you during shift.
Pray specifically for "bo-bo" the drug dealer who you see selling drugs on the corner of 5th and Main every day. Claim that sidewalk as God's terrority as you walk along it all the while pushing "bobo" out of the area.
If you are a School Resource Officer (SRO) you should be praying for God's peace and protection over your school. Don't be afraid to also hook into any student lead Christian groups or clubs and invite them to pray for their school as well.
Pray for any bars or nightclubs in your area to close, and claim those buildings for the Lord. Hold on to see what miracles that God will perform!
All Christians and especially “Christian Cops” must be aware that God has equipped them to overcome Satan's power. The Apostle Paul said that "the weapons of our warfare are not carnal (of a fleshly or earthly nature), but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds" (2 Cor. 10:4).
You may also recall the time in the Bible when the seventy disciples returned to the Lord rejoicing about the results of their ministry. They remarked, "Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name" (Luke 10:17). But then Jesus pointed out that the great marvel of this was that the devils were subject to them because their names were "written in heaven." In other words, because they were saved -- because of their relationship with Christ, they had authority over the Devil in the name of Jesus.
Jesus has given all His followers, and specifically all of us who know Jesus Christ personally as their Lord and Savior -- the authority to use His name to expel the forces of evil. To all believers, Jesus said, "In My name they will cast out demons..." (Mark 16:17). This doesn't mean that you have to actually lay hands on people or "Bible thump" someone over the head, or having them fall to the ground, and do all other kinds of physcial battery but rather it is simply asking God to do his will in the person or persons that may need the spirit of the Holy Ghost to be involved in the life of that person in an immediate way.
Yes, peace officers! Ephesians 6 and Romans 13 are just two of the many scriptures found in the Bible for you to use while on the job as a 'peacekeeper' for God. Once you learn to police with Godly authority your job as a peace officer will begin to open new doors and bring about a peace in your community like you have never experienced before! Step out on faith and give it a try!
In Jesus’ name!

Stop Blaming The Devil?
Recently, I read an article in Charism, a Christian magazine. In the article entitled; 'Stop Blaming the Devil'. http://charismamag.com/cms/spiritledliving/063008.php The author of the article writes the following statement; " One area in which the perceptions of believers do not line up with the truth relates to our understanding of how we are to deal with the devil. Many Christians believe we should order Satan around with great fervor, frequency and volume. Satan cooperates with this deception, conceding victories whenever necessary to perpetuate the lie that God's people need to battle him for everything God has promised them. This deception keeps earnest Christians too busy with Satan to focus on humbling and surrendering themselves to God"
Okay, overall maybe a fair statement except for the line that I have highlighted in bold which states; "Satan cooperates with this deception, conceding victories whenever necessary to perpetuate the lie that God's people need to battle him for everything God has promised them". Whether the writer just simply had an error in judgement or I have simply misunderstood the article in general. Nethertheless, It is a statement that I have heard many times before from some Christian believers who like to complain about our God-given victories over satan.
To get right to the point, I don't believe there any scripture in the Bible that gives Satan equal authority (or more authority) than God. I don't agree that satan has the power (or the authority) to 'concede any victories' as a way to deceive us from taking away God's blessed victories. I believe the writer in this article is elevating the devil to a higher position of authority and status than God would ever allow, much less agree with. The Bible in Ephesians 4:27 tells us: "and do not give the devil a foothold." this also includes undue praise!
If this wasn't enough. The writer of the article goes on to make the statement; "God is telling us that what will bring about the healing of the land is His people's turning away from wrong attitudes and self-centeredness. He does not say anything about warring with Satan to heal the land"
Fact is fact, the Bible makes clear that we are at war with satan and that he is our enemy. Anytime that you pray to God and ask for His will to be done you are, in effect, at war with satan and by the very fact "ordering satan around". And I don't agree that because we are at war with satan, we have the both self-centeredness and a wrong attitude. The Bible makes over 100 references to satan our enemy. Additionally, if the writer is making reference to Christians praying to satan well, that is a ridiculous statement. There is no Christian that I know who is praying to satan. Given authority over satan as a Christian you bet. Luke 10:19 states: " have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you." Verse 20 states: "However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." So, do not become conceited for the work that you do for the Lord. If this was what the author was trying to say by using the words" self-centerdeness" and a "wrong attitude" then I will buy it. But he needs to simplify his writing for dummies like me.
Last year, God spoke to me and told me to pray for a particular nightclub that was a major evil spot within our community. I have mentioned it extensively on this blog page as well as in the forthcoming book; "Dispatched By God". I prayed that it be "God's will that this nightclub be used for His purposes and glory". "I also claimed that building as territory for God". How surprised do you think that I was when 90 days later God not only closed that nightclub but turned it into a church! I was praying to God but by doing so I was in fact, ordering satan to leave by claiming terrority for God.
If I understand the writer of that magazine article correctly, he would want me to believe that satan conceded that building (terrority) to God as a way to deceive me into believing that it was something that God wanted". The writer would also want me to believe that I was being self-centered and having a wrong attitude? My response is simple. I was not praying to satan! I do not believe that satan heard my prayers and answered that prayer. I do not believe that God "gave away" my prayer that I gave to Him and allowed satan to conceive a plan in order to deceive me.
Additionally, as a side note to the overall article, I believe the writer is trying to lull us into a sense of false security to believe that all we have to do is set back and ask God to simply forgive us of all our sins (which is true) And there is nothing more we have to do (untrue) We are saved and we can now just wait around and wait to take that "heavenly train" and go to heaven.
I am also keenly aware of the fact that we are not saved by our works or good deeds alone. However, there is another side to that the majority of Christians and the Church does not seem to address. The Bible James 2:20 (LB) states the following "When will you ever learn that “believing” is useless without doing what God wants you to? Faith that does not result in good deeds is not real faith"
Listen, When you were baptized you made a statement to God and the people around you. You said, “I’m in!” But it doesn’t stop at baptism – not by a long shot! What else do you do? You start following the pattern of Jesus Christ, faith is proven by how we live. Don’t misinterpret this. What you do – your walking around, everyday life – doesn’t get you into heaven. It doesn’t make you saved. It doesn’t mean you’re a Christian; it shows you are a Christian.
Approximately, two weeks ago at around 2200 hrs, I responded to a home of a man who was having a verbal argument with family members over the care of their elderly mother. While responding to the residence, the dispatcher informed me that we had a hazard on the residence that this same subject had threatened to kill any law enforcement officer that stepped foot onto his property. I noticed that he was the one who was calling us to the residence for the disturbance. However, I was doing some powerful praying when the dispatcher informed me that this same man would shine a flashlight directing me the 200 yards off the main road into a wooded lot towards his house.
Upon arrival on scene, the man greeted me warmly, and I was able to rectify the legal issues involved to everyone satisfaction. As I was preparing to leave for many more pending calls on a busy Friday night, the man begin to sob and tell me that he just needed someone to talk with. Not wanting a potential suicide on my hands, I stayed and spoke with the man. I asked the man if he would like to speak with a department chaplain or pastor, he said "no" and asked me if I would talk with him, I did so. In fact, I placed my hand on the mans shoulder and prayed with him, and in turn this man (same one that threatened to kill any peace officer) prayed over me for protection. As we parted ways, he asked me where I attended church and I told him. This past Sunday during the second worship song this man walked into the service and stood next to me. With an outstretched hand, the man asked "do you remember me?" I told him that I did. The pastor spoke that Sunday on acknowledge your sins, and turning your problems over to God. Just what this man needed to hear. After the service, the man spoke with our Pastor and rededicated his life back to God.
Should I believe that this was yet another ploy of satan to deceive me into believing that God actually answers prayers?
Listen, I do believe that satan (aka, the devil) is a real threat. I also believe that every peace officer should have a clear understanding that like it or not, we find ourselves right in the middle of a spiritual war between good and evil. That satan does want to disrupt the ranks of God's first responders and will do so at any cost. But that does not mean that satan will "concede any victories" in order to deceive us that God will be done. Hardly not, did I mention that this is a real spiritual war and not some silly "war game". Besides, satan is not in the business of "conceding victories" for God. If you haven't noticed lately satan is busy trying to fill up the pits of hell with souls. Obviously, this writer has no clue has to what is going on around us.
I write this to tell you to be on-guard for satan (1st Peter 5:8) I also tell you to do what the Bible in Jeremiah 29:7 states; "Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper."
As the peace officers (gatekeepers, peacekeepers) for your city, county, state, or federal, you have the authority given to you in Romans 13:1-5 to take authority over your city and its residents. You are the protectors. I would encourage each of you to claim terrority for God through prayer. To pray specifically (and repeatedly) for problem areas in your city. Additionally, get out of your patrol car and meet the pastors in your community and help support and encourge them to rid satan from your community.
God's word in James 4:7 tells us to: "Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you"
So, stop blaming the devil? Hardly not. It reminds us that we as peace officers are on the front lines of a spiritual war and we need to fight the enemy of God.
Read Ephesians 6:10-19; "Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should"
So, go forth peace officers and do God's will. Do not worry about satan, just be aware that he surrounds us. Remember, that the earth is satan's realm and that we have been placed behind enemy lines for a Godly purpose and never forget that this is not all there is to life, that our heavenly home awaits us. That we are not meant to rest and make this heaven on earth. So, be strong in faith and in the spirit of our Lord. All who have fought the good fight, all who have believed on Him, shall have ever lasting life.
So, I say, go ahead and blame the devil. He deserves it, and it reminds us that we are in fight to the death on behalf of our Lord and Savior!
May God Bless and Watch Over and Protect You!

How Do You Develop Self-Control
God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid but a spirit of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NCV)
Successful people have one obvious trait in common: personal discipline. They are willing to do things that average people are unwilling to do. It’s my observation that successful people express their self-discipline in six ways:
· Successful people master their moods – They live by their commitments, not their emotions. They do the right thing, even when they don’t feel like it. “A person without self-control is as defenseless as a city with broken-down walls” (Proverbs 25:28 NLT).
· Successful people watch their words – They put their minds in gear before opening their mouths: “Those who control their tongue will have a long life ….” (Proverbs 13:3 NLT).
· Successful people restrain their reactions – How much can you take before you lose your cool? “People with good sense restrain their anger; they earn esteem by overlooking wrongs” (Proverbs 19:11 NLT). <p>
· Successful people stick to their schedule – If you don’t determine how you will spend your time, you can be sure that others will decide for you! “So be careful how you live, not as fools but as those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity for doing good in these evil days” (Ephesians 5:15-16, NLT).
· Successful people manage their money – They learn to live on less than what they make, and they invest the difference. The value of a budget is that it tells your money where you want it to go rather than wondering where it went: “The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get” (Proverbs 21:20 NLT).
· Successful people maintain their health – That way they can accomplish more and enjoy their achievements: “… control your body and live in holiness and honor” (1 Thessalonians 4:4 NLT).
Now, where do you need to develop self-control? The disciplines you establish today will determine your success tomorrow. But it takes more than just willpower for lasting self-control. It takes a power greater than yourself. Think about this promise from the Bible: “For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7 NLT).
The more I accept God’s control over my life, the more self-control he gives me!

Can You Be Used By God?
Recently, I was speaking with a fellow Christian officer who was sharing with me, the story of a Deputy Sheriff from a nearby county who had been in a officer involved shooting in which the subject was trying to drown a infant child in a lake and had made the mistake of pointing a gun in the direction of the Deputy. Of course, the Deputy Sheriff returned fire, killing the subject instantly. My brother in Christ, was sharing with me the pain and mental stress that this Deputy was going through over the shooting, witnessing the near drowning of a 3 week old baby, the local media coverage, and of the public outcry from the subject's family that was taking place. If that wasn't enough, the officer was second guessing himself concerning his role in the shooting incident.
I explained to my friend that I wished that I could get the word to this Deputy to let him know that he should not be troubled. That he was in fact, a "hero" who had found himself being thust into the spotlight being used as a tool by God to instantly dispatched that individual to the presence of our Lord. You see, I believe, that God needed to have a "come to Jesus meeting" with that subject on His time frame and God placed that officer there at that exact time to be used by Him in order to 'teleport', if you will, that man's soul back to his Heavenly Father in order to stand before the seat of judgement.
Part of our problem in the above scenario, is that the majority of the time we think about God in old testament terms. We wonder why God couldn't have just sent a lighting bolt out of the sky and dispatched that individual himself thus saving the officer a whole lot of grief and pain. While I personally don't believe that God is not capable of doing something like that, I believe that He instead wants and uses us to fulfill His role here on earth. It is part of God's new testament plan. For example, Jesus Christ explained in Mark 16: 15 He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation". Notice Jesus' didn't say, "God will go into all the world and preach the good news". Instead that verse is given to us as a commandment, Jesus' says; "GO". It is directed at YOU, US, humans! Additionally, in Ephesians 2:10 God's word tells us; "For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advanced for US to do.". Again, notice that He does NOT say the words; "That God will do for us".
On the day that we were born, none of us received a set of instructions from God telling us what 'good works' that He prepared in advanced for us to do. Instead, it is incumbent upon each of us to identify our own spiritual gifts and purposes and most importantly to allow ourselves to be used by God for His purposes. We are instructed in Romans 6:13 to, "surrender your whole being to Him to be used for righteous purposes".
I know that to many spiritual strong and spirit filled Christians this sounds like basic Theology 101 stuff, but people who do not know how to be used by God (which seems to be the majority) can be spiritually weak and find themselves subject to temptation by satan.
Listen, I am sure that the devil would be pleased to know that this particular officer is upset and down about the shooting. I am certain that satan would love to tell this officer "since you are down and think that you made a bad mistake, why not just go ahead and kill yourself". Could this be one of the reasons that peace officers have the highest rate of suicide? Maybe, at least part of the problem is that officers are listening to the wrong voice? Maybe officers don't understand that everyday that we put on the uniform, badge, and gun that we are working for our heavenly father. Why give a foot hold to the enemy for his victory?
So, the question really becomes why is it important for police officers to understand their Godly purpose? Simply stated, because police officers work on the front lines of a on-going spiritual battle between good and evil. Because we are working behind enemy lines here on earth. Because police officer's are God's first responders to crisis in motion. Because, police officers are God's representative here on earth to be used by God for righteous purposes, which God prepared in advance for us to do.
- Have you ever felt unworthy to worship in God's presence?
- Do you believe that God can use you for His purposes?
- Have you ever became so discourged in your job that you questioned where God was?
- Do you believe that God can use you in your job as a police officer?

Challenged From Behind the Cage

So you have just "hooked a crook" for some offense, and so far so good! You have placed the arrestee securely in the backseat of your patrol vehicle with little effort (or maybe some great effort) and you are safely secured from your subject behind a metal cage. You tune the radio to a great worship station and start driving towards the jail. But are you really safe?
Only moments after you have called out to dispatch and let them know you are enroute to the jail comes something that as an officer you don't always expect but seems to happen to all of us at one time or another. From the backseat comes a foul four lettered language that is immediatly recognizable by all officers, and it doesn't have to be from the English language either. In fact, it is often in French or Spanish words as well (we are all multi linguist interrupters here) It is often closely followed by spiting or even kicking at the backseat and windows, and it may sound something like this; "F-ing cops, if you weren't wearing that badge and gun I would kick your a--." You look up into the rear view mirror, smile sheepishly and reply, "yeah buddy, I bet you would do just that! Now, just settle down partner". You turn up the radio a little louder trying to drown out the demon in your backseat, but you are about to find out that he (or she) isn't finished with this conversation as yet. "Partner this pig! Stop this car right now and I will show you who I am..... punk cop!" If any of this sounds familiar to you then you have just found yourself being"challenged from behind the cage".
Sometimes we are challenged out on the streets or in homes in much the same way but rarely are we provoked more than in that close 12" inches of personal space located behind the cage, and while enroute to the booking station. Why is that, and more importantly how does this impact you as a christian peace officer?
The short answer is that it does hurt us both professionally and personally. Why should it? Because we are human. It is not an excuse but rather it is a fact. Yes, we want to stop that patrol vehicle rip open the door and pull that arrestee out through the window and give him a true come to Jesus meeting! And unfortunately, some of us have done that and it can costs us both professionally, as well as spiritually.
So, in our search for answers to these questions let us go to the Bible for our answers. But why the Bible you ask? The Bible is actually our manual for living as Christians. Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church makes the following analogy in his book, "The Purpose Driven Life". He stated "if I handed you an invention that you had never seen and didn't know how to use, then you would need some instructions or direction from it's inventor (creator)." I like that analogy because quite simply you didn't create yourself, so without some direction from your creator, via the Bible that is God's word (your guidebook) you wouldn't know how to operate yourself. So, with that being said, I prayerfully hope that you make the Bible from this day forth your instruction manual for daily living.
The first, and most obvious response found in the Bible whenever you find yourself challenged from behind the cage, can be found in Luke 6:27-31 (NIV); "But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you."
But the above Bible verse sounds to soft, too......manby-panby! Okay, but I am a policeman and what about Romans 13:1-7 ? Afterall, doesn't that verse tell us...."For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer"
But hold on now, before you say; "YES! I knew it! just what I wanted to hear! bring wrath on the wrongdoer! "That's what I'm talking about!" We need to understand that is NOT what I'm talking about. You need to remember that Satan temps us, but God tests us. The Bible states in James 1:13-14, "When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed"
Did you realize that testing by God is necessary for our spiritual growth and maturity as Christians? The Bible in James 1:2-4 tells us the following; "Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything"
In other words, you can say that if you have never been tested or tried you can never share with others the joy of how God has delivered you out of the times of sin, hopelessness, or despaire thus by doing so leading others to a life with Christ. In fact, had two christian peace officers not shared their personal testimony with me about this issue I would not have been to write this article for many more, prehaps even thousands of peace officers to read.
If you haven't notice satan loves to beat up, beat down, harass, embarass, and generally supress us as Christians in any way possible and especially those of us who fullfill our role as peace officers. Why you may ask? Because we have direct Biblical authority as stated in Romans 13:1-5 we are a prime target of satan and we often get into satan's way in his quest for a lawess society.
So, whenever you are challenged from behind the cage. Just remember that satan is trying to pick us cops off one at a time and he will use anyone at anytime to do it. But to give you hope, remember that God may be testing us in order to build us spiritually stronger and more character for His glory and honor. Hebrews 13:5 tells us that God will never leave us or forsake (abandon) you. Which means God is with us at all times, even when we are challenged from behind the cage.
Some Questions To Ponder
- Have you ever found yourself being challenged from behind the cage, or on the streets?
- If Yes, what was your response to that challenge?
- Did you realize at the time that you may have been being tempted (or tested)?
- Do you think your experience in being challenged was a learning experience or just a bad experience?

God Works On His Time Frame!
As I pulled my marked patrol unit into the business parking lot I spoke with my partner and told her that I had seen three homeless men walking southbound. My zone partner yelled back; "Yeah, but you need to come over here". Now, for a brief second I thought to myself, "what's the deal, she can't shoo a few homeless people out on her own?" As I approached the back of the business with my partner she yelled for one man to come out of small shed. The man exited and my partner indicated that she knew him by name, "Michael" a local homeless man whom she had not seen in a couple of years. I noticed almost immediately that this man did not seen like he was one of the regular homeless, this guy seemed different. Many of the local homeless have lost the sparkle to their eyes, covered in alcohol and soiled. This man was clean shaven, did not reek of alcohol (but did have possession of a couple of unopened beer cans) and did have a sparkle in his eyes (and no, it was not glassed over).
As I asked him questions, I noticed that he was respectful and that there was just something different about him. I told "Michael" that I needed to conduct a Field Interview Card (FIC) on him and was going to issue him a trespass warning for the business and to follow me over to my patrol vehicle.
I thought to myself, "man I would love the opportunity to 'speak" with this guy" about his status and more importantly about God's love for him, what his purpose in life is all about, and how he's sees himself as giving back to God. These are usually the three things that I will discuss with people with whom God lays on my heart this desire to speak with.
As I thought about this, I also thought that I could not discuss this matter with my zone partner present and thought that I would like to have some alone time to complete my FIC, Trespass Warning, and speak to this man. At that exact moment, the alert tone on our radio went off. "beep...beep...beep". This is our alert tone for a crime in progress and is most often used for a hold up or an armed robbery of some type. In fact, it was a report of a strong armed robbery taking place with screaming in the background. My zone partner said; "gotta go" and took off.
Now alone with Michael and after a few minutes of the standard line of questioning I asked Michael "what did he see as his purpose in life?" Michael replied "What do you mean?" I noticed that Michael had a tattoo of a cross on his left hand. I asked him "what about that cross tattooed on your hand, do you believe that you were created by God?" Michael replied "Yes I am a Christian".
I asked Michael, "then how do you think that you should honor God and give back to him for creating you?". Michael thought for a moment and said, " Well sir, I don't know, honestly I've never thought about God like that before". I explained to Michael that God created you for a specific purpose that God gave each one of us special gifts and talents and that we should use those gifts to honor him and not to honor ourselves. I told Michael that he was not honoring his creator by being homeless and drunk all day long. Michael agreed. Then I noticed that Michael had a gleam in his eye and said; "I believe that God gave me the ability to play music". I love music, and until I sold my guitar for beer money I played Christian music".
Tears began to weld up in Michael's eyes and he said; "Sir, I've made some very bad mistakes in my life". As I finished up the FIC card and the computer checks, I told Michael that I was not here to condemn him. I showed Michael a bracelet that I wear. On the bracelet is the words "Forgiven". I asked Michael to read these words, and tell me what do they say? Michael read the bracelet and stated slowly the words, "Forgiven". I said, "Michael, God has already forgiven you for the sins that you (and I) have committed but you have never forgiven yourself". Tears began to flow now down both sides of Michael eyes.
Michael said, "Sir, tell me again why did you come here today". Seizing this opportunity I told Michael that "God sent me here to tell you clean yourself up, go to a quite place alone, get on your knees and get right with God, and go and forth and give back to your creator for the things that he has given you". I handed Michael a "You Have the Right to Remain Silent" tract and give him directions to visit a local church and the name of one of our department chaplains who is a pastor at that church.
Michael said, "Sir, I do believe that God sent you here to me today to talk to me". I have never had another police officer ever talk to me like you did, thank you".
I tried to hurry Michael along because I wanted to go help the other four patrol units and our helicopter go look for this armed robber as I put my car in drive, Michael said, "Sir, can I shake your hand one more time?" I put my foot on the brake and shook Michael's hand again and he said, "Sir I promise you that I will go and pray and think about you said". Michael asked, "how can I reach you?".
I told Michael to not worry about trying to reach me that the best gift for me would be for me not to see him out here on the streets anymore and that one day we would see one another in heaven. Michael looked down at the ground and shook his head in acknowledgment. I told Michael that I had to go now, but that I would pray for him and told him "God Bless" as I drove away. Michael said; "No sir, God bless you".
As I pulled out of the business parking lot I turned my patrol car to the north and started to head in the general direction of the armed robbery call that my partner had hurriedly rushed off to. I checked my MDC computer at the call. I noticed that all the patrol units were now cancelled and cleared off the call. I looked at the complaint on the call and it said; "Unknown". Comments by the dispatchers and officers into the CAD call read; "Searched parking lot of any witnesses and victim, no flag down and no witnesses". Dispatchers did make contact with a female caller who stated that she did not want any help, that there was no crime, and did not wish to speak with any police officers". I shook my head in amazement and stated "Thank you God for giving me time with Michael".
Say what you will, but I believe that God created a time frame in a instant for me to speak with Michael.
Some Questions For Review
Bible verse for reading: Hebrews 13:2 " Do not forget to entertain strangers, for by so doing some people have entertained angels without knowing it"
- Can you allow God to create time for you to work on the spiritual needs of those in your community who are hurting?
- What words can you say to help those who have needs like Michael?
- Can you see pass the obvious to those who are spiritual in need of Christ's salvation and love?
- Would you have seen Michael as just another 'homeless drunk'?
