Are you Really Ready to Serve?</title><content type='html'>Let's face it! All of us at one time or the other, have had our moments of difficulty and struggles in life, whether it is professional or personal. There are days when we don't want to get out of bed and go to work, and there are days where we just want to retreat to our peace and quite away from the family and the world. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Can you reflect on days as a police officer where you didn't have your "A" game on? Maybe you have referred to it as an, "off day" where we don't want to get into anything and hope that our twelve hour shift goes by really fast? I know that I have had those days. But as any cop will tell you we are not in control of the calls for service that we are dispatched to. We must be ready at all times for that "hot" call that may become a robbery, burglary, fight, or gunman in progress call. We have to always be tactically "turned on" and "charged to go" even though we may never feel like it. We know that if we are not tactically sound or mentally ready in our mind, then we could get ourselves or our partners seriously hurt, or even killed. In short, we just can't play cop, we have to be a cop! We must have our "A Game" on all the time while at work. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;With that said, are we really ready to serve God in the same way? Are you being "10-8, in service" for God? Honestly, we should always feel the need to be turned on and ready to serve God at a moments notice, but really are we? Are we serving as a Christian or, are we simply playing the part of a Christian? So, the question becomes.....How do I know?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's ask ourselves a few personal questions. As a "Christian" do you feel that even though you may have been baptized, accepted Christ as your Lord and Savior, and attend church regularly you still feel as if something is missing in your life? You study your bible regularly, you worship at church, yet you are still missing something. You have conflict on the job and in your family, and you are becoming a master in the use of the four-lettered language.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just as a good Investigator with all your law enforcement training has provided, you began to search all the wrong places looking for this "missing something" in your life. You check the computer and yet all you find is pornography. You go out drinking after work with your co-workers but the more you drink all you find is the bottom of the bottle. You find yourself fighting with your spouse and your children. Your female partner, an old girlfriend, or the waitress at Denny's at 2am begins to look better to you than your own spouse and a "new" family seems better than your old one. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Still in your zealous search, you take on more responsibility at work. You work more overtime details trying to drown yourself in money and time lost, yet you still can't find what you're looking for. Actually, you see yourself becoming ugly and mean. So, you cry out;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;"My God! Something’s missing, Something’s wrong with me! Lord help me!"&lt;/span&gt; But you still find that the peace you are searching for is not coming easily. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If this sounds familiar to you, then please realize that you are not alone. So many Christians are dissatisfied with their current spiritual condition, that they long for more evidence of God in their lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But did you know, that the Bible in Acts 18 and 19 show us a series of stories of individuals and groups that were also ‘missing something’ in their spirituality. In Acts 18:24-28 a man called Apollos was accurately teaching the scriptures and preaching about Jesus, but somehow he knew only the ‘baptism of John.’ Something was missing. The twelve disciples in Ephesus also knew only the baptism of John and had not received the Spirit.  Something was missing. In Acts 19:13-16 there were some who tried to exercise demons in the name of the Lord Jesus, but they failed. Something was missing. And these are only a few examples.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, you ask. What was it that both you and these great biblical men of their generation were missing? The answer is actually one that is very easy. It was simply a personal, life-changing experience with the Holy Spirit.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What does the Holy Spirit have to do with it you may ask? After all, I don't need to be rolling on the floor of any church, falling down, speaking in tongues, raising my hands above my head. That's just too weird and besides that ain't my style you say.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First of all, having the Holy Spirit in you does not necessarily mean that any of those things listed above will ever happen to you. The Apostle Paul in 2 Corinthians 4:7 (New King James Version) states it like this; &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;"But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I like to use this example. Having the Holy Spirit in you is like saying that you have a brand new 2010 Patrol Vehicle, you have read the owners manual, you have sat behind the wheel, you have played with the horn, siren, and lights, but when it is time to go out on patrol with your shiny brand new 2010 patrol vehicle it has no gas in the tank. Well guess what? You aren't going very far. In fact, without gas in the tank, your new car is not going to even start up.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You become frustrated with this car. You may even get so mad at the car that you get out and kick the tires, you scream at the car and dare I say, even yell a few choice four-lettered words at your car. But as hard as you cruse at it, kick it, scream and cry at it. Without putting gas in your car you are not going to move. Then suddenly you hear laughter coming from across the precinct parking lot. You see all your shift buddies rolling on the floor in laughter. You feel as if this is a scene from TV's 'Punked' or 'Candid Camera'.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But have you ever stopped to think that we may be treating our very own spiritual life in the same way? We get angry at God, we cry out to God, &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;"oh why, oh why?",&lt;/span&gt; we try and run away from God, we try and bury ourselves in work, and in time away from our families all in the name of trying to "find ourselves". All the while God is in heaven looking down upon you, smiling and wondering when you are going to get the actual SIMPLICITY of the gospel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The Apostle Paul says it this way: &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?” &lt;/span&gt;(Galatians 3:3). What this great Apostle is asking is this; Are you trying to push the car? kick the car? Curse at the car? Cry out to the car, oh why aren't you starting up for me? Yet, all you need to do is fill up the tank with a little gas, and not even a full tank to get the car moving. Remember, the victorious Christian life is a gift attainable by allowing the Holy Spirit to live through us by faith!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God never intended the Christian life to be a life full of drudgery, Jesus said, &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full”&lt;/span&gt; (John 10:10). The Christian life was never meant to be a burden, although some of us have made it to be. Jesus said &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“my yoke is easy and my burden is light” &lt;/span&gt;(Matthew 11:30). The Christian life was meant to be a life of supernatural love, joy and peace.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The book of Titus; chapter 3 addresses this issue of the "Holy Spirit".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, 6 whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior,&lt;/span&gt; (NKJ)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The word "renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior..." (Titus 3:5b-6). Those first converts on Pentecost were told that if they repented and were baptized in the name of Jesus that they would receive the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38).  "Regeneration" and "renewing" are very similar concepts. One difference would be that the act of "regeneration" happens once when we are baptized while the "renewing" is an ongoing process which begins when we obey the gospel.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You know, that there are parts of every big city that are badly in need of "urban renewal." The last few years of living in Los Angeles taught me a little bit about "urban renewal". This means that things need to be cleaned up, repaired and painted. The "renewing by the Holy Spirit" is a similar process. It involves obeying the Holy Spirit's revelation, the Scriptures, to clean up and remove those things which are not becoming to the life and attitudes of a Christian and replacing them with those attributes which are (Galatians 5:18-25).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I once heard this saying; "God never wastes a hurt". Are you hurting? Do you need to "renew" and "clean up" your life? God is waiting on you! We don't have much time left. We need to act now. One of my most favorite Bible verses says this; &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;"When I was a child, I spoke and thought and reasoned as a child. But when I grew up, I put away childish things"&lt;/span&gt;.1 Corinthians 13:11&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Get right today with God and with your family. None of us have a time machine that can erase the past, but did you know that God possesses the best time machine. He can and will erase all of your past, old life if you simply go to Him and call out to Him but you must repent. The word "repent" is actually an old word that means "to change one's mind". You can also say, to "change one's life". Repent and ask forgiveness from the Lord for your past sins. Ask, the Lord to fill you with His Holy Spirit. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;No, the Holy Spirit does not automatically come to you, no more than a brand new car comes with a full tank of gasoline. But, it takes little effort to fill up the tank with gas, and little effort to live a life with the Holy Spirit in you. Once you do, you will never look back on your old life. Steve Reynolds writes in his blog; "Confessions of a Recovering Legalist"; &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;"When I first discovered living the Christian life by grace through faith, it was like a door opened and I began to see the world through different eyes -- eyes full of child-like wonder and awe. Every song that I heard was God’s sonnet of love written to me. Every breeze that I felt on my face was him gently caressing the skin of his beloved child. Every moment of every day began to take on purpose and meaning, and God began to speak to me in ways that he never had before".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I would suggest to you, that we are ‘baptized’ in the Spirit at the point of our salvation, though many of us have hindered or resisted the freedom of the Spirit in our lives. There may come a subsequent ‘crisis experience’ where, through faith and submission, the Spirit is ‘actually released’ in our lives. Or maybe we could say that the Spirit is ‘actualized.’or 'realized' at that point in our lives. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;May God grant you the peace to allow the Holy Spirit to work through you and change your life and fill your tank with an endless supply of gasoline that will enable you to serve our Lord and Savior! As imaged, during the course of my day, I deal with a variety of problems that cover everything from State law, School Policy, and yes, even moral standard questions such as offensive dress, offensive words, and issues of disrespect towards teachers and fellow students. Often,  school officials will bring a violation to me for review as a possible violation of state law. I will use one scenario here only as an example. Many of you who have been assigned as SRO's will appreciate this one.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All schools have a policy about bringing weapons on a school campus and occasionally, I will have some school administrator bring me a plastic knife found on a student. Of course, I always ask the same questions which is &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"what was the student's intent?"&lt;/span&gt;, "&lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;Did a criminal act occur with the knife?"&lt;/span&gt;, or &lt;span style="font-style: italic;"&gt;"did you just find the plastic knife on the student's possession?&lt;/span&gt;". It is always the same story and I have never as yet, criminally charged a student with possession of a weapon on campus for simply possessing a plastic knife. However, with that being said the school always treats every weapon scenario the same; 10 days suspension and to put the student up for school expulsion. You see, the school has a very narrow, you can say legalistic view of the policy that offers no room for grace.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you have been working in law enforcement for more than a year, you know that you need to apply a certain amount of grace to every law enforcement situation that you find yourself in. Some of us, may refer to that "grace" as "common sense".  We know that those officer's who are successful in this job are those that evenly apply the law mixed with a healthy dose of common sense. After all, if you don't apply the law with some measure of grace (aka - common sense) then while assigned to running radar in a 30 mph speed limit you will be writing tickets for those who you find doing 31 mph or even better yet, those that are driving 29 mph. Right? You can only image the problems that you will find yourself in for that one. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;How many of us in our christian walk have the same legalistic mindset? While doing some internet research on this topic I discovered the following writing. I could not reduce it to just a few lines, so I am offering the full article here for you to read entitled; &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;"Confessions of a Recovering Legalist"&lt;/span&gt; By Steve Reynolds. As you read this article please be honest and tell me if you see yourself in this article. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;May God Bless you and watch over you!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Mike Dye&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Legalists often place a high premium on commandment keeping and obedience.1 They are extremely zealous for God’s law. The standard that they bear is the Ten Commandments, and they are diligent to point out every misstep in the lives of people they come in contact with. They can also be very diligent in pointing out their own missteps as well. As a result, they can carry around an extraordinary amount of self-imposed guilt. I know. I am a recovering legalist.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Legalism is a Christian heresy that is as old as the church. When God devotes an entire book of the Bible to combating a certain thing you can know for sure that it was, is and will be a problem for the church. That is exactly what God did with the book of Galatians. He devoted an entire book, perhaps the most impassioned book of the Bible -- to combat the heresy of legalism. I can honestly tell you that I used to read Galatians and think, "Hey, Paul, what’s the big deal? After all, isn't it a good thing to want to keep God’s law?" Now I understand what the big deal is. Let's not sugarcoat it. Paul called legalism "a different gospel."2 That is serious business.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Definition&lt;br /&gt;What exactly is legalism? I’ve developed my own simple definition after years of struggling with my own legalistic tendencies. I believe that legalism is trying to attain or maintain rightness (righteousness) with God by human effort. Most of us don’t have a problem with the “attain” part of that definition. We would never tell a lost person that if they try real hard and do all the right things, they can be saved. No way! We say, you’ve got to admit there is nothing that you can do to be saved -- that you are lost without Jesus!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;However, here’s where the heresy and perversion of the gospel comes in. Keep in mind that the book of Galatians was not written by Paul to lost people, telling them how to be saved. It was written to people who had already received the Holy Spirit.3 Paul was angry with these baby Christians because they were trying to live out the Christian life by keeping the law!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The heresy of legalism involves telling people that there are certain things that they must do to “maintain” their rightness with God or to achieve victory in the Christian life! Paul says it this way: “After beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human effort?” (Galatians 3:3). The victorious Christian life is a gift attainable by allowing the Holy Spirit to live through us by faith!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Peter tells us that, “His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness” (2 Peter 1:3). Isn’t it just like God to give us the victory? Is that not what he did over and over in the Old Testament? “It was not by their sword that they won the land, nor did their arm bring them victory; it was your right hand, your arm, and the light of your face, for you loved them” (Psalms 44:3). Having a great work ethic is a good thing in the world, but it will get you no where in the economy of God’s plan of salvation. He will not share his glory with you or me. He’s paid too high a price to purchase our salvation.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I came to Christ, my philosophy was, “I’ve accepted Christ, now I’m ready to commit myself to keeping his commandments.” I was really ignorant of how the Christian life is to be lived out -- by faith.4 I thought if I read enough of the Bible and obeyed what I read, that I would achieve victory. Sounds logical doesn’t it? Some of you who are reading this are saying, “What’s wrong with that?” Ever wonder why the Bible talks about obeying or disobeying the gospel?5 How exactly does one obey the Gospel and keep obeying it? The answer is by trusting Christ to live the Christian life through them by the gift of the Holy Spirit that was given to us at salvation. He is indeed “the author and finisher of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2 KJV).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I was steeped in legalism, struggling was a way of life for me. I was extremely critical of myself and others, and I just could not seem to help myself. I remember telling this to a trusted counselor, and he told me, “You’ve got to learn how to apply grace in your life.” Well, I didn’t know about all this namby-pamby grace and love stuff (To be honest we legalists often begin to squirm in our seats when people talk about God’s love too much). It all smacked of liberalism to me, and I wasn’t sure that I wanted any part of it. Thank God he opened my eyes enough that I took a chance on living by grace. I haven’t been the same since I took that first step!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When I first discovered living the Christian life by grace through faith, it was like a door opened and I began to see the world through different eyes -- eyes full of child-like wonder and awe. Every song that I heard was God’s sonnet of love written to me. Every breeze that I felt on my face was him gently caressing the skin of his beloved child. Every moment of every day began to take on purpose and meaning, and God began to speak to me in ways that he never had before.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Over the history of the Christian church living by grace has been called by various names. Paul called it “walking in the spirit.” Others have called it “the exchanged life,” “the spirit-filled life” “the victorious life” or even more recently, “the gracewalk.”6 In the book of Galatians it is presented as the antithesis of living under the law.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Legalism is bad medicine. If your heart is full of bitterness towards others and self-condemnation, could it be that you have been going about living the Christian life all wrong? If anything that I have said has struck a chord with you, you can be sure that God desperately wants you to be set free from legalism. Let me share with you a remarkable truth. God loves legalists. He hates legalism, but he loves legalists. I believe that one of the most passionate statements in the Bible is Jesus lamenting, heart-broken over the fact that the legalists of his day had rejected him.7&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;F. F. Bruce, one of the greatest theologians of the twentieth century, said that “Doing the will of God is not a matter of conformity to outward rules but of giving expression to inward love, such as the Spirit begets.”8 The Christian life was never meant to be a life of drudgery, although some of us have made it to be. Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10). The Christian life was never meant to be a burden, although some of us have made it to be. Jesus said “my yoke is easy and my burden is light” (Matthew 11:30). The Christian life was meant to be a life of supernatural love, joy and peace that is squelched when we attempt to live under legalism. For by thy words thou shall be justified, and by thy words thou shall be condemned".&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Are you speaking life into everyone you see, or does your daily talk “speak death?” Though the Bible has much to say about this topic, it seems greatly overlooked by most Christians in our profession. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Proverbs 18:21 says,&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;"Death and life are in the power of the tongue; and they that love it shall eat of the fruit thereof"&lt;/span&gt;.  James Chapter five says: &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;"You can tame a tiger, but you can’t tame the tongue – it’s never been done!"&lt;/span&gt; (The Message) Unfortunately as Christians we can witness the ‘demise’ of our dreams, visions and our blessings with what we allow to come out of our mouths. Are we seriously watching the things that we say - not just about ourselves - but about our circumstances, situations and others?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Early on in my law enforcement career I was guilty of something I call, “cop cursing.” The word “curse” evokes a variety of responses:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;• To many, it’s the use of foul language or profanity.&lt;br /&gt;•  Others think of curses as nothing more than the stuff of fairy tales, with witches casting spells and turning handsome princes into ugly toads.&lt;br /&gt;• There are two Dictionary definitions for the word “Curse”&lt;br /&gt;o A profane or obscene expression of anger&lt;br /&gt;o An appeal to a supernatural power for harm to come to a specific person or group, etc.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;“Cop cursing” is used frequently by police officers to help gain control of a situation, or to gain someone’s attention in an immediate way. Often the officer speaking the cuss word may or may not have a habit of using foul language and uses it to prove a point rather than in anger.  However, as most officers know, “cop cussing” does not work with people under the influence of drugs or alcohol as they cannot comprehend it. With the average sober citizen, it can result in a citizen’s complaint.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The most effect cop cussing I have done on the job has been with young people ages 12-21 - the most impressionable group of all. Once I went into &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“Drill Sergeant”&lt;/span&gt; mode, many times these young people would end up crying.  Then I would think to myself rather proudly, &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“Ah ha, I’ve got them so now I win.”&lt;/span&gt;  I’m ashamed to admit it now, but my speech was in direct conflict with Scripture.  In Ephesians 4:29 we are told: &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;"When you talk, do not say harmful things, but say what people need—words that will help others become stronger".&lt;/span&gt; In short, instead of speaking life to these young people I was speaking death. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When you &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“cop cuss”&lt;/span&gt; two things happen immediately:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;First, it makes you become an ineffective witness for Christ to those standing around you, including&lt;br /&gt;your fellow officer’s. They may be thinking: &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“See, I told you all Christians are hypocrites!”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Second, it gives satan an upper hand when you allow him to speak through you instead of God. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Instead we should remember that Christ doesn’t speak death (four lettered words) and you shouldn’t either. So, how do you speak life into someone? Really, it's simple. You, simply allow God to speak through you as if God himself were speaking. Ask yourself, what would God said in this situation? Personally, I have found a very effective line that works well and I’ll use it as an example here; “&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;Listen, there are only two things in this world, good and evil. You cannot be both good and evil and you must choose".&lt;/span&gt; If you noticed, using this example, I have just spoken life in this sentence as opposed to death and it actually is a biblical principle without actually quoting scripture (just in case you are scared about quoting scripture on the job). This principle can be found in 1st Kings 18-21 &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“Elijah went before the people and said, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.".&lt;/span&gt; &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But what about a foul joke, isn’t that harmless?  After all, cops and foul jokes are common place in our job. Well, the answer to this question can be found in Ephesians 5:3-6; &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. For of this you can be sure: No immoral, impure or greedy person—such a man is an idolater—has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of such things God's wrath comes on those who are disobedient. Therefore do not be partners with them".&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It doesn’t get any plainer than that! So, stop your cop cursing and your foul jokes. For Christians, you have an even higher standard placed upon you and can be found in James 1:26; &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“ If anyone among you thinks he is religious, and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his own heart, this one’s religion is useless.”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Okay, but what about our jobs? Are we speaking death, or putting a curse over our jobs?  Have you stopped to think that when you complain about your job, or your working conditions, your equipment, your Chief or Supervisors that you are actually speaking a curse over your job? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ecclesiastes 10:20 &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“Do not revile the king even in your thoughts, or curse the rich in your bedroom, because a bird of the air may carry your words, and a bird on the wing may report what you say.”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Consider this principle, every time that you speak, you should begin to arrest your thoughts and frisk them thoroughly to see if they are carrying doubt of any kind. II Corinthians 10:5 says,&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt; "Casting down imaginations and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing captive every thought to the obedience of Christ.”&lt;/span&gt;  In other word, if the thought in your mind is not supporting your faith, then don’t speak it!’ &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We have to do something with the span of time between when we have it in mind and when it tangibly becomes ours. If we don’t &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;‘speak’&lt;/span&gt; strengthened faith to ourselves, the thoughts in our mind will keep us on endless emotional roller coaster acting on the impulse of them, intentionally or unintentionally, speaking them out loud and being influenced by negative comments of others. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As Christians, we need to stop blocking God’s blessings by speaking negatively.  God wants to bless us, but we become a hindrance to ourselves in receiving Gods blessings when we speak things that are in opposition of Gods Word. Remember, we must always ‘choose’ to speak life to everything that is of a concern to us and believe what we say until complete manifestation. We must talk faith to our circumstances at all times just as it says in Romans 4:17, &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“…Even God, who quickens the dead, calls those things which be not as though they were.” &lt;/span&gt; This includes the drug dealers, prostuites, hate mongers, gang members, and others who the police are called upon to deal with. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here are some classic examples of things that we say that may sound harmless but is actually stopping God’s blessing in your life and cursing you:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;I’m poor and I’m broke; I have no money&lt;br /&gt;I have (name of disease), I’ll never get healed from it.&lt;br /&gt;I’m ugly&lt;br /&gt;I’m fat&lt;br /&gt;I’m a failure&lt;br /&gt;I’ll never find love&lt;br /&gt;God doesn’t love me, or hear me when I pray &lt;br /&gt;My marriage is going to fail&lt;br /&gt;I’m going to lose my job&lt;br /&gt;I’m stupid&lt;br /&gt;I’m a worrier&lt;br /&gt;I’m sick and tired of _________.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You must understand that by speaking these words, you’re claiming it to be so in your life – you’re decreeing and declaring brokenness. For example, Even if you are sick, don’t go around claiming it, instead say you’re healed.  Do this for every other negative thing in your life.  Remember words are seeds that can yield a good or bad harvest in your life –depending on what you speak.  The very essence of our being was spoken into existence by God&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A Prayer - God, I pray that you will help me to be wise. Help me to hear and increase in learning, to acquire skill, and to attain to sound counsel so that I may steer my course rightly. I pray that you may arrest my thoughts and frisk my words so that I everything that I say will be pleasing unto you. From this day on I make a decision to speak your blessings upon my life and the life’s of others with whom I am in contact with.  In Jesus name I pray. Amen. Most recently, today (11/29/2009) four Lakewood Police Officers were killed while on duty in a coffee shop. It appears that this was an ambush attack. Back on Halloween 10/31/2009 a Seattle Police Officer was killed while sitting inside of his patrol vehicle. Or, how could forget the killing of four Oakland (CA) Police officers back in March of this year.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Most recently, there was a nation news story about the wave of anti-government and anti-authority sentiment going on in the city of Seattle and in the State of Washington area. The Pacific Northwest has long been home to a variety of liberal rights groups to include the Earth Liberation Front (ELF), PETA, and who can forget the World Trade Organization (WTO) riots from just a few years ago in Seattle and most recently in Pittsburg, PA. In which law enforcement officers were the target of vicious attacks. Many of us dismiss this as simply a loosely formed band of left wing, idealist who are unorganized and non violent. But how many of us miss the calculate attacks against law enforcement in general. Remember, evil always hates good. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Should be worried about foreign terrorist on domestic soil, or should be looking at home-grown terrorist already here on domestic soil? From a strictly spiritual approach, my thoughts lean to, could these killings be the birth pains of satan and his demons making a final, last stand charge against the only lines of demarcation between the Christians community (the police)or, simply stated, as "the good" vs. "the evil" theory?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Many years ago, while working in Los Angeles, a Godly co-worker had a prophetic word. He said; &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;"You know, we are never going to need more Godly law enforcement officers than the day nearer Christ return"&lt;/span&gt;. This started an hour long conversation that I have never forgotten. We spoke about how in a conventional war, one of the goals of the enemy is to infiltrate the lines in order to break up the ranks. If the enemy can cause confusion and doubt among the troops then the lines of engagement are blurred and thus the enemy can begin to take out the troop’s one at time. There were perils drawn to the Vietnam War. Our talk then turned to the tribulation / pre-and post tribulation and the role of those law enforcement officers that were left behind. Both of us agreed, that neither one of us, wished to be left behind. This conversation took place in the summer of 2005.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Here is my question to each of you. Could we now be seeing a glimpse of things to come? Could we begin to see more attacks on our nation’s law enforcement authority as we erode the last of our nation’s morals? Could what we have seen happening in the West of our nation over the past year explode nationwide as law enforcement officers find themselves smack in the middle of a spiritual battle that they are not prepared for. Are you ready for a spiritual battle? Are you ready to be left behind? Don't be left behind! Make a stand on the side of good, make a stand for God. Be a spiritual strong and Godly law enforcement officer. Just as today's killings illustrate, it can happen anywhere at anytime. Are you praying for your city? Are you performing as the watchman in your town, just as thousands of years before when the watchman Ezekiel stood at the city walls?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Sergeant Sean Gill of McComb MS wrote this poem at my request back on November 19th. I was planning on releasing this poem on the inside of cover of the follow up book to the Peacekeeper’s, but I believe it is both timely and prophetic for this e-mail and I am releasing it here early.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ezekiel 22: 30 “I looked for someone who might rebuild the wall of righteousness that guards the land. I searched for someone to stand in the gap in the wall so I wouldn’t have to destroy the land, but I found no one.”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-weight:bold;"&gt;“Watchmen are We”&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Just as our ancient Kinsmen, standing on Jerusalem’s wall,&lt;br /&gt;Though Peace Keepers, Watchmen are we.&lt;br /&gt;Standing in the gap rebuilding after the fall&lt;br /&gt;Against the attacks of darkness protecting all,&lt;br /&gt;On the City's wall, Watchmen are we.&lt;br /&gt;Standing on our City’s wall watchmen are we, praying&lt;br /&gt;For the city’s prosperity all to God’s glory.&lt;br /&gt;Standing on Jerusalem’s wall Peace Keepers,&lt;br /&gt;Watchmen are we.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Though we are Peace Keepers, “servants of God to do good, and an agent of His wrath on the wrongdoers” Romans 13:4, Watchmen are we. This, He tells us in Ezekiel 3: 17 “Son of man, I have made you a watchman for the house of Israel; so hear the word I speak and give them warning from me.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As watchmen on the walls of our Cities He tells us this, &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“O Jerusalem, I have posted watchmen on your walls; they will pray day and night, continually. Take no rest, all you who pray to the Lord.”&lt;/span&gt; Isaiah 62: 6. Then Jeremiah 29:7 tells us to, &lt;span style="font-style:italic;"&gt;“Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the Lord for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper."&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Protecting the cities, all that is in our jurisdiction physically, one can see. He has placed as Watchmen on the wall of righteousness that guards the land. In the gap we are to stand, as the tide of darkness attacks, praying for the City’s prosperity, all to His Glory.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Are you ready? Are you praying for your city? Growing up many of us were taught simple and easy to remember prayers, much like the prayers that my wife and I are teaching our daughter now. for example; &lt;em&gt;"Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord my soul to keep".&lt;/em&gt; or, &lt;em&gt;"God is great, God is good let me think him for our food"&lt;/em&gt;. What an outstanding and simple way to lay a spiritual foundation in the lives of our children not only for a belief in God but in establishing a life long foundation of prayer and of faith.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But the question really becomes how many of us actually mature from these child-like prayers into really understanding the power of prayer? .&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;What is Prayer?&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's start with some basics. What is prayer? Prayer is quite simply our communication with God, the father. But when and how should we use prayer? Unfortunately, far too many of us don't use it enough. Instead, we relay on prayer as a way to cry out to God for help only during our most difficult and stressful times in our lives. But rarely do we view prayer as our daily communication with God. I call this the &lt;em&gt;Genie in the Bible&lt;/em&gt; prayer. We keep God locked away in the Bible until we need Him at the most desperate times and then we pull Him out like some &lt;em&gt;Genie in the bottle (Bible)&lt;/em&gt; to hurry up and grant us our three free wishes. And when we don't get our three free wishes we draw ourselves away from God similarly like a child who gathers up their toys from the sandbox to go play with someone else.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Proactive versus Reactive Prayer&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In law enforcement we have proactive and reactive policing. Proactive policing is when you search out criminal activity. You keep crime and criminals on the move. For example, you may be doing lots of traffic stops on a drug dealer’s street corner, you may be stopping and talking to prosutues which is making the "john's" drive away. In proactive policing you get into the game and try to make the in-roads within your community as a way to deter crime.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Reactive policing is just the opposite. Maybe you know officers who simply ride the outside rim of their zone, called "rim riders". Maybe, an officer does not want to go into the crime ridden areas and rather simply respond to criminal complaints instead of actual detering the crime.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But have you ever stopped to think that prayer can be the same way? We can pray proactively that God will be done in our area of responsibilities. For example, praying that God will be done in removing drug dealers from our communities. That God will be using you to be the 'gatekeeper' for your city and in your area of responsibility. That you will allow God to use you as His tool to do His will in your area of concern and responsibility.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Some Excuses We Use&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We can find all types of excuses not to pray proactively. Maybe, you have known people who have said; " I don't want to bother God because, well, &lt;em&gt;"He is so big and I am so small and He has so much stuff to do with wars, hunger, poverty, and injustice found in the world today that I wouldn't even consider bothering our Lord for His time". &lt;/em&gt;How far from the truth this can be. Philippians 4:6-7 tells us, &lt;em&gt;"Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Some Great Examples of Prayer&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;A great example of a prayer can be found in Matthew 6:9-13. These verses are known as the Lord's prayer. Most of us know the Lord's prayer but did you also know that the Lord's prayer is not a prayer we are supposed to memorize and simply recite to God. It is only an example of how to pray and the things that should go into a prayer. Things such as worship, trust in God, requests, confession, protection, Pray for these kinds of things, but speak to God using your own words.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We need to also remember that our prayers being answered is not based on the eloquence of our prayers. We don't have to use certain words or phrases to get God to answer our prayers. In fact, Jesus rebukes those who pray using repetitions, &lt;em&gt;"And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him"&lt;/em&gt; (Matthew 6:7-8).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Never forget that Prayer is your direct communication with God. And you don't need any intercessor to do it for you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;The Power of Prayer&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is no magic formula to prayer and as previously stated God is not to be used like some magic &lt;em&gt;Genie in the Bible. &lt;/em&gt;It is important to understand that the power of prayer is not the result of the person praying. Rather, the power that resides in God who is being prayed to. 1 John 5:14-15 tells us,&lt;em&gt; "This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us - whatever we ask - we know that we have what we asked of him."&lt;/em&gt; No matter the person praying, the passion behind the prayer, or the purpose of the prayer - God answers prayers that are in agreement with His will. His answers are not always yes, but are always in our best interest. When our desires line up with His will, then we will come to understand that in time, when we pray passionately and purposefully, according to God's will, God responds powerfully! Then we won't gather up our toys and go to another sandbox but instead we will rejoyce in the Lord during both the good and the bad times of our lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Prayer in the Hands of the Police&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now that we have established what prayer is, then the question becomes why don't we as peace officers utilize it more often? Can you image the power of God working through our law enforcement officers in order to battle the strongholds in your city? Can you image what transformations could begin in our cities if officers earnestly began to pray about their own individual area of responsibility? &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Can you as a peacekeeper for Christ, set aside any any false ideas of prayer being about 'religious obligations' or about 'wasting' God time, but instead use the power of prayer to allow God to transform your communities. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Never forget what God's word in Philippians 4:13 states; &lt;em&gt;"I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me".&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;More excerpts to come! But do we as peace officers (and the public) really under the comparison?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Let's first take a look at Ephesians 6:10; "&lt;i&gt; 10Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. 14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. 16In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. 19Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should"&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I would like to place into bold highlights a few of these outstanding Bible verses as found in Ephesians 6 for further discussion; In verse 11 the verse states;&lt;i&gt;11Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes &lt;/i&gt;So, what exactly does this verse mean? In short, it means that you can not stand up against the evil in this world alone, which translates to "the devils schemes", and without having a strong level of spiritual maturity.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Part of obtaining spiritual maturity means that you need to spend time reading God's word (which is the Bible) daily. It means that you need prayer partners and strong Christian fellowship with other believers, which means that you should belong to a Church. Did you know that the word "Church" comes from the Greek word; "ekklesia" which translates into “assembly" or "congregation." It is used to refer to a group of persons that are organized together for a common purpose and who meet together. It is properly utilized to describe the Church as "the body of Christ". Just as you cannot survive if your head was disconnected from your body, likewise, your heart and mind, cannot be disconnected from the spiritually body that is the church. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, don't think that you can stay out of church and still have Godly strength and character. That would be like an alcoholic trying to go sober without the help of family or an AA group.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;In verse 12 we see some specific writing regarding&lt;i&gt; "spiritual warfare". &lt;/i&gt;The Bible states; &lt;i&gt;"For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms."&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Simply stated this is a key verse found in the Bible to describe satan's attacks against us (Christian or otherwise) and one in which every peace officer should understand to the fullest. As police officer's on the job, we see our work as one in which we are found in the middle of a war between "good and evil". Every officer regardless of what religious rearing from atheist to believer will confirm that we as police officers see both "good and evil" in our jobs. Additionally, they will agree that as police officers we can find ourselves right in the middle of this “war” between ‘good and evil’.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Unfortunately, most police officers while recognizing this concept do not fully understand it and as a result, the consequences of failing to understand it are all too great. Once the devil begins to play his "schemes" (as found in verse 11) against these "warriors of good". (Read Romans 13:1-7) Without a strong spiritual foundation (and spiritual maturity) satan's schemes will be manfestiated against the officer and in turn leads to a number of issues that we are all too familiar with. Here are a few listed here;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;b&gt;our divorce rate is 60-70% higher than the national average&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;our alcoholism rate is 2 times the national average&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;our domestic violence rate is among the highest of all professions&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;our suicide rate is 3 times the national average&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Personally, I love what is written in verses 14 and 15; "&lt;i&gt;14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, 15and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As Christian peace officers, we should walk proudly and with our head held high and have the full knowledge that we are a child of the highest King and as such we should view ourselves as "ambassadors" for the Lord. Additionally, we should view our jobs as peace officers as a gift from the Lord in which we are expected to do "good" (Read Romans 13:4 " &lt;i&gt;4For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer") &lt;/i&gt;When we can understand these verses in it’s fullest, we can begin to stand tall, without fear, bold in our faith, and know that we can bring a peace about our beat (area of responsibility) no matter where we are assigned; patrol, investigations, community relations, School Resource Officers, training, etc. these two verses should give you the authority and understanding to police with Godly authority.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Verse 18; 18And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Prayer. For many, prayer can be confusing but prayer is simply your conversation with God. It does not need to be formal, rather it simply needs to come from the heart. Our instructions for prayer can be found in Matthew 6:5;&lt;i&gt; "5"And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full. 6But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. 7And when you pray, do not keep on babbling like pagans, for they think they will be heard because of their many words. 8Do not be like them, for your Father knows what you need before you ask him.&lt;/i&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some Christians refer to the following as breaking strongholds. A&lt;i&gt; ‘stronghold’&lt;/i&gt; can be any area of sin. It can be an internal sin in your own life such as pride, greed, drugs, alcohol, or pornography&lt;br /&gt;Or it may be in external sin such as a physical location like a strip club, bars, drug houses (or street corners), or maybe even a city block.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As law enforcement officers we should be praying daily for these strongholds not only in your own life (or the life of your partner) but also in your area of responsibility. I can personally testify as to what I have seen God do with the prayers that I have uplifted to Him in my various assignments, as well as to a peace and calm that He will install over your beat area whenever you pray specifically. As a peace officer please do not discount the power of prayer. It is one of the necessary tools that you can have on your &lt;i&gt;"tool belt"&lt;/i&gt; in order to combat the evil that we encounter on the job.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As God deals primarily with individuals, we do see throughout Scripture that He also deals with regions. He gave Abraham a geographical region. He foretold the regions in which Jesus would minister. He sent prophets to certain cities, such as Jonah to Nineveh, and some prophets to the Northern tribes and some specifically to the Southern tribes. Some prophets prophesied against cities such as Babylon and Tyre. The Great Commission ordered the Apostles to go to certain cities and regions. We can clearly see that God is concerned about geographical regions because of His concern and love for the people that live in those areas. In short, you are a "gatekeeper" for God in your specific city, county, or state.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;But how do I do this you ask? It is simple. Here are some examples;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pray specifically for His protection and guidance over you during shift.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pray specifically for "bo-bo" the drug dealer who you see selling drugs on the corner of 5th and Main every day. Claim that sidewalk as God's terrority as you walk along it all the while pushing "bobo" out of the area.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are a School Resource Officer (SRO) you should be praying for God's peace and protection over your school. Don't be afraid to also hook into any student lead Christian groups or clubs and invite them to pray for their school as well. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Pray for any bars or nightclubs in your area to close, and claim those buildings for the Lord. Hold on to see what miracles that God will perform!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;All Christians and especially “Christian Cops” must be aware that God has equipped them to overcome Satan's power. The Apostle Paul said that &lt;i&gt;"the weapons of our warfare are not carnal (of a fleshly or earthly nature), but mighty in God for pulling down &lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;strongholds"&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt; &lt;/i&gt;(2 Cor. 10:4).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;You may also recall the time in the Bible when the seventy disciples returned to the Lord rejoicing about the results of their ministry. They remarked, &lt;i&gt;"Lord, even the demons are subject to us in your name" &lt;/i&gt;(Luke 10:17). But then Jesus pointed out that the great marvel of this was that the devils were subject to them because their names were &lt;i&gt;"written in heaven." &lt;/i&gt;In other words, because they were saved -- because of their relationship with Christ, they had authority over the Devil in the name of Jesus.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Jesus has given all His followers, and specifically all of us who know Jesus Christ personally as their Lord and Savior -- the authority to use His name to expel the forces of evil. To all believers, Jesus said, &lt;i&gt;"In My name they will cast out demons..." (Mark 16:17).&lt;/i&gt; This doesn't mean that you have to actually lay hands on people or "Bible thump" someone over the head, or having them fall to the ground, and do all other kinds of physcial battery but rather it is simply asking God to do his will in the person or persons that may need the spirit of the Holy Ghost to be involved in the life of that person in an immediate way. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Yes, peace officers! Ephesians 6 and Romans 13 are just two of the many scriptures found in the Bible for you to use while on the job as a 'peacekeeper' for God. Once you learn to police with Godly authority your job as a peace officer will begin to open new doors and bring about a peace in your community like you have never experienced before! However, I feel the need to air my frustration at particular Christian writers, pastors, and others who like to complain that some of us, as Christians spend to much time placing blame on &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; for everything that goes wrong. While I agree we should not blame &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; for everything, nor do I always feel that &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; is hiding around every corner. However, we must not forget what God's word in 1st Peter 5:8 tells us about &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt;; &lt;em&gt;" Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour."&lt;/em&gt; So, hiding around every corner? Maybe, yes! Should we be alert and on-guard for &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt;, you bet!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Recently, I read an article in &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_5"&gt;Charism&lt;/span&gt;, a Christian magazine. In the article entitled; 'Stop Blaming the Devil'. &lt;a href="http://charismamag.com/cms/spiritledliving/063008.php"&gt;http://charismamag.com/cms/spiritledliving/063008.php&lt;/a&gt; The author of the article writes the following statement; " &lt;em&gt;One area in which the perceptions of believers do not line up with the truth relates to our understanding of how we are to deal with the devil. Many Christians believe we should order Satan around with great fervor, frequency and volume. &lt;strong&gt;Satan cooperates with this deception, conceding victories whenever necessary&lt;/strong&gt; to perpetuate the lie that God's people need to battle him for everything God has promised them. This deception keeps earnest Christians too busy with Satan to focus on humbling and surrendering themselves to God"&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Okay, overall maybe a fair statement except for the line that I have highlighted in bold which states; &lt;em&gt;"Satan cooperates with this deception, conceding victories whenever necessary to perpetuate the lie that God's people need to battle him for everything God has promised them".&lt;/em&gt; Whether the writer just simply had an error in judgement or I have simply misunderstood the article in general. &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_6"&gt;Nethertheless&lt;/span&gt;, It is a statement that I have heard many times before from some Christian believers who like to complain about our God-given victories over &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_7"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To get right to the point, I don't believe there any scripture in the Bible that gives Satan equal authority (or more authority) than God. I don't agree that &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_8"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; has the power (or the authority) to &lt;strong&gt;'concede any victories'&lt;/strong&gt; as &lt;strong&gt;a way to deceive us&lt;/strong&gt; from taking away God's blessed victories. I believe the writer in this article is elevating the devil to a higher position of authority and status than God would ever allow, much less agree with. The Bible in Ephesians 4:27 tells us: &lt;em&gt;"and do not give the devil a foothold." &lt;/em&gt;this also includes undue praise!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If this wasn't enough. The writer of the article goes on to make the statement; "&lt;em&gt;God is telling us that what will bring about the healing of the land is His people's turning away from wrong attitudes and self-&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_9"&gt;centeredness&lt;/span&gt;. He does not say anything about warring with Satan to heal the land"&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Fact is fact, the Bible makes clear that we are at war with &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_10"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; and that he is our enemy. Anytime that you pray to God and ask for His will to be done you are, in effect, at war with &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_11"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; and by the very fact "ordering &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_12"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; around". And I don't agree that because we are at war with &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_13"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt;, we have the both self-&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_14"&gt;centeredness&lt;/span&gt; and a wrong attitude. The Bible makes over 100 references to &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_15"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; our enemy. Additionally, if the writer is making reference to Christians praying to &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_16"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; well, that is a &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_17"&gt;ridiculous&lt;/span&gt; statement. There is no Christian that I know who is praying to &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_18"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt;. Given authority over &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_19"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; as a Christian you bet. Luke 10:19 states: " &lt;em&gt;have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you&lt;/em&gt;." Verse 20 states: &lt;em&gt;"However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven." &lt;/em&gt;So, do not become conceited for the work that you do for the Lord. If this was what the author was trying to say by using the words" self-&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_20"&gt;centerdeness&lt;/span&gt;" and a "wrong attitude" then I will buy it. But he needs to simplify his writing for dummies like me. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Last year, God spoke to me and told me to pray for a particular nightclub that was a major evil spot within our community. I have mentioned it extensively on this blog page as well as in the forthcoming book; &lt;em&gt;"Dispatched By God".&lt;/em&gt; I prayed that it be "God's will that this nightclub be used for His purposes and glory". "I also claimed that building as territory for God". How surprised do you think that I was when 90 days later God not only closed that nightclub but turned it into a church! I was praying to God but by doing so I was in fact, ordering &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_21"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; to leave by claiming &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_22"&gt;terrority&lt;/span&gt; for God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If I understand the writer of that magazine article correctly, he would want me to believe that &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_23"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; conceded that building (&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_24"&gt;terrority&lt;/span&gt;) to God as a way to deceive me into believing that it was something that God wanted". The writer would also want me to believe that I was being self-centered and having a wrong attitude? My response is simple. I was not praying to &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_25"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt;! I do not believe that &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_26"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; heard my prayers and answered that prayer. I do not believe that God "gave away" my prayer that I gave to Him and allowed &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_27"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; to conceive a plan in order to deceive me.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Additionally, as a side note to the overall article, I believe the writer is trying to lull us into a sense of false security to believe that all we have to do is set back and ask God to simply forgive us of all our sins (which is true) And there is nothing more we have to do (untrue) We are saved and we can now just wait around and wait to take that "heavenly train" and go to heaven.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="left"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I am also keenly aware of the fact that we are not saved by our works or good deeds alone. However, there is another side to that the majority of Christians and the Church does not seem to address. The Bible James 2:20 (LB) states the following "&lt;em&gt;When will you ever learn that “believing” is useless without doing what God wants you to? Faith that does not result in good deeds is not real faith" &lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Listen, When you were baptized you made a statement to God and the people around you. You said, “I’m in!” But it &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_28"&gt;doesn&lt;/span&gt;’t stop at baptism – not by a long shot! What else do you do? You start following the pattern of Jesus Christ, faith is proven by how we live. Don’t misinterpret this. What you do – your walking around, everyday life – &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_29"&gt;doesn&lt;/span&gt;’t get you into heaven. It &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_30"&gt;doesn&lt;/span&gt;’t make you saved. It &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_31"&gt;doesn&lt;/span&gt;’t mean you’re a Christian; it shows you are a Christian.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Approximately, two weeks ago at around 2200 hrs, I responded to a home of a man who was having a verbal argument with family members over the care of their elderly mother. While responding to the residence, the dispatcher informed me that we had a hazard on the residence that this same subject had threatened to kill any law enforcement officer that stepped foot onto his property. I noticed that he was the one who was calling us to the residence for the disturbance. However, I was doing some powerful praying when the dispatcher informed me that this same man would shine a flashlight directing me the 200 yards off the main road into a wooded lot towards his house.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Upon arrival on scene, the man greeted me warmly, and I was able to rectify the legal issues involved to everyone satisfaction. As I was preparing to leave for many more pending calls on a busy Friday night, the man begin to sob and tell me that he just needed someone to talk with. Not wanting a potential suicide on my hands, I stayed and spoke with the man. I asked the man if he would like to speak with a department chaplain or pastor, he said "no" and asked me if I would talk with him, I did so. In fact, I placed my hand on the mans shoulder and prayed with him, and in turn this man (same one that threatened to kill any peace officer) prayed over me for protection. As we parted ways, he asked me where I attended church and I told him. This past Sunday during the second worship song this man walked into the service and stood next to me. With an outstretched hand, the man asked "do you remember me?" I told him that I did. The pastor spoke that Sunday on acknowledge your sins, and turning your problems over to God. Just what this man needed to hear. After the service, the man spoke with our Pastor and rededicated his life back to God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Should I believe that this was yet another ploy of &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_32"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; to deceive me into believing that God actually answers prayers?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Listen, I do believe that &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_33"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; (aka, the devil) is a real threat. I also believe that every peace officer should have a clear understanding that like it or not, we find ourselves right in the middle of a spiritual war between good and evil. That &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_34"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; does want to disrupt the ranks of God's first responders and will do so at any cost. But that does not mean that &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_35"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; will "concede any victories" in order to deceive us that God will be done. Hardly not, did I mention that this is a real spiritual war and not some silly "war game". Besides, &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_36"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; is not in the business of "&lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_37"&gt;conceding&lt;/span&gt; victories" for God. If you haven't noticed lately &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_38"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; is busy trying to fill up the pits of hell with souls. Obviously, this writer has no clue has to what is going on around us.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I write this to tell you to be on-guard for &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_39"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; (1st Peter 5:8) I also tell you to do what the Bible in Jeremiah 29:7 states; &lt;em&gt;"Also, seek the peace and prosperity of the city to which I have carried you into exile. Pray to the LORD for it, because if it prospers, you too will prosper."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As the peace officers (gatekeepers, peacekeepers) for your city, county, state, or federal, you have the authority given to you in Romans 13:1-5 to take authority over your city and its residents. You are the protectors. I would &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_40"&gt;encourage&lt;/span&gt; each of you to claim &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_41"&gt;terrority&lt;/span&gt; for God through prayer. To pray specifically (and repeatedly) for problem areas in your city. Additionally, get out of your patrol car and meet the pastors in your community and help support and &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_42"&gt;encourge&lt;/span&gt; them to rid &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_43"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt; from your community.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;God's word in James 4:7 tells us to: &lt;em&gt;"Submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you"&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, stop blaming the devil? Hardly not. It reminds us that we as peace officers are on the front lines of a spiritual war and we need to fight the enemy of God.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Read Ephesians 6:10-19; &lt;em&gt;"Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Pray also for me, that whenever I open my mouth, words may be given me so that I will fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains. Pray that I may declare it fearlessly, as I should"&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, go forth peace officers and do God's will. Do not worry about &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_44"&gt;satan&lt;/span&gt;, just be aware that he surrounds us. Remember, that the earth is &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_45"&gt;satan's&lt;/span&gt; realm and that we have been placed behind enemy lines for a Godly purpose and never forget that this is not all there is to life, that our heavenly home awaits us. That we are not meant to rest and make this heaven on earth. So, be strong in faith and in the spirit of our Lord. All who have fought the good fight, all who have believed on Him, shall have ever lasting life.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, I say, go ahead and blame the devil. I thought it was important enough for everyone to read. A good example of how directly the Bible can speak to you.&lt;p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;God did not give us a spirit that makes us afraid but a spirit of power and love and self-control. 2 Timothy 1:7 (NCV)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Successful people have one obvious trait in common: personal discipline. They are willing to do things that average people are unwilling to do. It’s my observation that successful people express their self-discipline in six ways: &lt;p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;· &lt;strong&gt;Successful people master their moods&lt;/strong&gt; – They live by their commitments, not their emotions. They do the right thing, even when they don’t feel like it.&lt;em&gt; “A person without self-control is as defenseless as a city with broken-down walls” (Proverbs 25:28 NLT).&lt;/em&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;· &lt;strong&gt;Successful people watch their words&lt;/strong&gt; – They put their minds in gear before opening their mouths: &lt;em&gt;“Those who control their tongue will have a long life ….” (Proverbs 13:3 NLT). &lt;p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;· &lt;strong&gt;Successful people restrain their reactions&lt;/strong&gt; – How much can you take before you lose your cool? &lt;em&gt;“People with good sense restrain their anger; they earn esteem by overlooking wrongs” (Proverbs 19:11 NLT). &lt;&lt;/em&gt;p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;· &lt;strong&gt;Successful people stick to their schedule&lt;/strong&gt; – If you don’t determine how you will spend your time, you can be sure that others will decide for you! &lt;em&gt;“So be careful how you live, not as fools but as those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity for doing good in these evil days” (Ephesians 5:15-16, NLT).&lt;p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;· &lt;strong&gt;Successful people manage their money&lt;/strong&gt; – They learn to live on less than what they make, and they invest the difference. The value of a budget is that it tells your money where you want it to go rather than wondering where it went: &lt;em&gt;“The wise have wealth and luxury, but fools spend whatever they get” (Proverbs 21:20 NLT). &lt;p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;· Successful people maintain their health&lt;/strong&gt; – That way they can accomplish more and enjoy their achievements: &lt;em&gt;“… control your body and live in holiness and honor” (1 Thessalonians 4:4 NLT). &lt;p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div align="center"&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Now, where do you need to develop self-control?&lt;/strong&gt; The disciplines you establish today will determine your success tomorrow. But it takes more than just willpower for lasting self-control. It takes a power greater than yourself. I am not worthy to even face God!&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div&gt;Have you ever had these thoughts? If so, you are not alone. Feeling not worthy of being in the presence of our Lord is the single biggest threat to NOT having a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;p&gt;Recently, I was speaking with a fellow Christian officer who was sharing with me, the story of a Deputy Sheriff from a nearby county who had been in a officer involved shooting in which the subject was trying to drown a infant child in a lake and had made the mistake of pointing a gun in the direction of the Deputy. Of course, the Deputy Sheriff returned fire, killing the subject instantly. My brother in Christ, was sharing with me the pain and mental stress that this Deputy was going through over the shooting, witnessing the near drowning of a 3 week old baby, the local media coverage, and of the public outcry from the subject's family that was taking place. If that wasn't enough, the officer was second guessing himself concerning his role in the shooting incident.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I explained to my friend that I wished that I could get the word to this Deputy to let him know that he should not be troubled. That he was in fact, a "&lt;em&gt;hero"&lt;/em&gt; who had found himself being thust into the spotlight being used as a tool by God to instantly dispatched that individual to the presence of our Lord. You see, I believe, that God needed to have a &lt;em&gt;"come to Jesus meeting"&lt;/em&gt; with that subject on His time frame and God placed that officer there at that exact time to be used by Him in order to 'teleport', if you will, that man's soul back to his Heavenly Father in order to stand before the seat of judgement.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Part of our problem in the above scenario, is that the majority of the time we think about God in old testament terms. We wonder why God couldn't have just sent a lighting bolt out of the sky and dispatched that individual himself thus saving the officer a whole lot of grief and pain. While I personally don't believe that God is not capable of doing something like that, I believe that He instead wants and uses us to fulfill His role here on earth. It is part of God's new testament plan. For example, Jesus Christ explained in Mark 16: 15 He said to them, &lt;em&gt;"Go into all the world and preach the good news to all creation".&lt;/em&gt; Notice Jesus' didn't say, "&lt;em&gt;God will go&lt;/em&gt; into all the world and preach the good news". Instead that verse is given to us as a commandment, Jesus' says; "&lt;em&gt;GO&lt;/em&gt;". It is directed at YOU, US, humans! Additionally, in Ephesians 2:10 God's word tells us; &lt;em&gt;"For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advanced for US to do.".&lt;/em&gt; Again, notice that He does NOT say the words; "&lt;em&gt;That God will do for us".&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;On the day that we were born, none of us received a set of instructions from God telling us what &lt;em&gt;'good works'&lt;/em&gt; that &lt;em&gt;He prepared in advanced for us&lt;/em&gt; to do. Instead, it is incumbent upon each of us to identify our own spiritual gifts and purposes and most importantly to allow ourselves to be used by God for His purposes. We are instructed in Romans 6:13 to,&lt;em&gt; "surrender your whole being to Him to be used for righteous purposes". &lt;/p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;p&gt;I know that to many spiritual strong and spirit filled Christians this sounds like basic Theology 101 stuff, but people who do not know how to be used by God (which seems to be the majority) can be spiritually weak and find themselves subject to temptation by satan. &lt;p&gt;Listen, I am sure that the devil would be pleased to know that this particular officer is upset and down about the shooting. I am certain that satan would love to tell this officer &lt;em&gt;"since you are down and think that you made a bad mistake, why not just go ahead and kill yourself".&lt;/em&gt; Could this be one of the reasons that peace officers have the highest rate of suicide? Maybe, at least part of the problem is that officers are listening to the wrong voice? Maybe officers don't understand that everyday that we put on the uniform, badge, and gun that we are working for our heavenly father. Why give a foot hold to the enemy for his victory?&lt;br /&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So, the question really becomes why is it important for police officers to understand their Godly purpose? Simply stated, because police officers work on the front lines of a on-going spiritual battle between good and evil. Because we are working behind enemy lines here on earth. Because police officer's are God's first responders to crisis in motion. Because, police officers are God's representative here on earth to be used by God &lt;em&gt;for righteous purposes, which God prepared in advance for us to do. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;div&gt;So, to my brother officer who is hurting over taking a life and to all my brother officers who may be faced with taking a life in the future. Please don't despair and don't weep! You did not take a life in anger or without justification. Instead, understand you have just been used by God and knowing this should bring about a peaceful presence of the Holy Spirit to rest upon your troubled mind. As found in John 14:27; "&lt;em&gt;Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Thank you for sharing Brother!&lt;/em&gt; &lt;p&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;So you have just "hooked a crook" for some offense, and so far so good! You have placed the arrestee securely in the backseat of your patrol vehicle with little effort (or maybe some great effort) and you are safely secured from your subject behind a metal cage. You tune the radio to a great worship station and start driving towards the jail. But are you really safe?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Only moments after you have called out to dispatch and let them know you are enroute to the jail comes something that as an officer you don't always expect but seems to happen to all of us at one time or another. From the backseat comes a foul four lettered language that is immediatly recognizable by all officers, and it doesn't have to be from the English language either. In fact, it is often in French or Spanish words as well (we are all multi linguist interrupters here) It is often closely followed by spiting or even kicking at the backseat and windows, and it may sound something like this; "&lt;em&gt;F-ing cops, if you weren't wearing that badge and gun I would kick your a--."&lt;/em&gt; You look up into the rear view mirror, smile sheepishly and reply, &lt;em&gt;"yeah buddy, I bet you would do just that! Now, just settle down partner".&lt;/em&gt; You turn up the radio a little louder trying to drown out the demon in your backseat, but you are about to find out that he (or she) isn't finished with this conversation as yet. &lt;em&gt;"Partner this pig! Stop this car right now and I will show you who I am..... punk cop!"&lt;/em&gt; If any of this sounds familiar to you then you have just found yourself being&lt;strong&gt;"&lt;em&gt;challenged from behind the cage&lt;/em&gt;".&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;p&gt;Sometimes we are challenged out on the streets or in homes in much the same way but rarely are we provoked more than in that close 12" inches of personal space located behind the cage, and while enroute to the booking station. Why is that, and more importantly how does this impact you as a christian peace officer?&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The short answer is that it does hurt us both professionally and personally. Why should it? Because we are human. It is not an excuse but rather it is a fact. Yes, we want to stop that patrol vehicle rip open the door and pull that arrestee out through the window and give him a true come to Jesus meeting! And unfortunately, some of us have done that and it can costs us both professionally, as well as spiritually. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So, in our search for answers to these questions let us go to the Bible for our answers. But why the Bible you ask? The Bible is actually our manual for living as Christians. Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church makes the following analogy in his book, &lt;em&gt;"The Purpose Driven Life".&lt;/em&gt; He stated &lt;em&gt;"if I handed you an invention that you had never seen and didn't know how to use, then you would need some instructions or direction from it's inventor (creator)."&lt;/em&gt; I like that analogy because quite simply you didn't create yourself, so without some direction from your creator, via the Bible that is God's word (your guidebook) you wouldn't know how to operate yourself. So, with that being said, I prayerfully hope that you make the Bible from this day forth your instruction manual for daily living. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;p&gt;The first, and most obvious response found in the Bible whenever you find yourself &lt;em&gt;challenged from behind the cage&lt;/em&gt;, can be found in Luke 6:27-31 (NIV); &lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;"But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you."&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;But the above Bible verse sounds to soft, too......manby-panby! Okay, but I am a policeman and what about Romans 13:1-7 ? Afterall, doesn't that verse tell us&lt;strong&gt;...."&lt;em&gt;For he is God's servant to do you good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not bear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant, an agent of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer"&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;div&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;p&gt;But hold on now, before you say; "&lt;em&gt;YES! I knew it! just what I wanted to hear! bring wrath on the wrongdoer! "That's what I'm talking about!" &lt;/em&gt;We need to understand that is NOT what I'm talking about. You need to remember that Satan temps us, but God tests us. The Bible states in James 1:13-14, &lt;em&gt;"When tempted, no one should say, "God is tempting me." For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; but each one is tempted when, by his own evil desire, he is dragged away and enticed" &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;Did you realize that testing by God is necessary for our spiritual growth and maturity as Christians? The Bible in James 1:2-4 tells us the following; &lt;em&gt;"Consider it pure joy, my brothers, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith develops perseverance. Perseverance must finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything" &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;/em&gt;In other words,&lt;em&gt; y&lt;/em&gt;ou can say that if you have never been tested or tried you can never share with others the joy of how God has delivered you out of the times of sin, hopelessness, or despaire thus by doing so leading others to a life with Christ. In fact, had two christian peace officers not shared their personal testimony with me about this issue I would not have been to write this article for many more, prehaps even thousands of peace officers to read.&lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;p&gt;If you haven't notice satan loves to beat up, beat down, harass, embarass, and generally supress us as Christians in any way possible and especially those of us who fullfill our role as peace officers. Why you may ask? Because we have direct Biblical authority as stated in Romans 13:1-5 we are a prime target of satan and we often get into satan's way in his quest for a lawess society. &lt;/p&gt;&lt;p&gt;&lt;p&gt;So, whenever you are challenged from behind the cage. Just remember that satan is trying to pick us cops off one at a time and he will use anyone at anytime to do it. But to give you hope, remember that God may be testing us in order to build us spiritually stronger and more character for His glory and honor. Hebrews 13:5 tells us that God will never leave us or forsake (abandon) you. My zone partner was on scene just a minute or so ahead of me and as I approached on the main road I could see three of our local homeless man walking southbound on the main street away from the business.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I pulled my marked patrol unit into the business parking lot I spoke with my partner and told her that I had seen three homeless men walking southbound. My zone partner yelled back; &lt;em&gt;"Yeah, but you need to come over here". &lt;/em&gt;Now, for a brief second I thought to myself, &lt;em&gt;"what's the deal, she can't shoo a few homeless people out on her own?"&lt;/em&gt; As I approached the back of the business with my partner she yelled for one man to come out of small shed. The man exited and my partner indicated that she knew him by name, "Michael" a local homeless man whom she had not seen in a couple of years. I noticed almost immediately that this man did not seen like he was one of the regular homeless, this guy seemed different. Many of the local homeless have lost the sparkle to their eyes, covered in alcohol and soiled. This man was clean shaven, did not reek of alcohol (but did have possession of a couple of unopened beer cans) and did have a sparkle in his eyes (and no, it was not glassed over).&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I asked him questions, I noticed that he was respectful and that there was just something different about him. I told "Michael" that I needed to conduct a Field Interview Card (FIC) on him and was going to issue him a trespass warning for the business and to follow me over to my patrol vehicle.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I thought to myself, &lt;em&gt;"man I would love the opportunity to 'speak" with this guy" &lt;/em&gt;about his status and more importantly about God's love for him, what his purpose in life is all about, and how he's sees himself as giving back to God. These are usually the three things that I will discuss with people with whom God lays on my heart this desire to speak with.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I thought about this, I also thought that I could not discuss this matter with my zone partner present and thought that I would like to have some alone time to complete my FIC, Trespass Warning, and &lt;em&gt;speak&lt;/em&gt; to this man. At that exact moment, the alert tone on our radio went off. &lt;em&gt;"beep...beep...beep".&lt;/em&gt; This is our alert tone for a crime in progress and is most often used for a hold up or an armed robbery of some type. In fact, it was a report of a strong armed robbery taking place with screaming in the background. My zone partner said; &lt;em&gt;"gotta go"&lt;/em&gt; and took off.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Now alone with Michael and after a few minutes of the standard line of questioning I asked Michael &lt;em&gt;"what did he see as his purpose in life?"&lt;/em&gt; Michael replied &lt;em&gt;"What do you mean?"&lt;/em&gt; I noticed that Michael had a tattoo of a cross on his left hand. I asked him "&lt;em&gt;what about that cross tattooed on your hand, do you believe that you were created by God?"&lt;/em&gt; Michael replied "&lt;em&gt;Yes I am a Christian".&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I asked Michael, "&lt;em&gt;then how do you think that you should honor God and give back to him for creating you?".&lt;/em&gt; Michael thought for a moment and said, &lt;em&gt;" Well sir, I don't know, honestly I've never thought about God like that before".&lt;/em&gt; I explained to Michael that God created you for a specific purpose that God gave each one of us special gifts and talents and that we should use those gifts to honor him and not to honor ourselves. I told Michael that he was not honoring his creator by being homeless and drunk all day long. Michael agreed. Then I noticed that Michael had a gleam in his eye and said; "&lt;em&gt;I believe that God gave me the ability to play music". I love music, and until I sold my guitar for beer money I played Christian music".&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Tears began to weld up in Michael's eyes and he said; "&lt;em&gt;Sir, I've made some very bad mistakes in my life".&lt;/em&gt; As I finished up the FIC card and the computer checks, I told Michael that I was not here to condemn him. I showed Michael a bracelet that I wear. On the bracelet is the words "Forgiven". I asked Michael to read these words, and tell me what do they say? Michael read the bracelet and stated slowly the words, "Forgiven". I said, &lt;em&gt;"Michael, God has already forgiven you for the sins that you (and I) have committed but you have never forgiven yourself".&lt;/em&gt; Tears began to flow now down both sides of Michael eyes.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Michael said, &lt;em&gt;"Sir, tell me again why did you come here today".&lt;/em&gt; Seizing this opportunity I told Michael that "&lt;em&gt;God sent me here to tell you clean yourself up, go to a quite place alone, get on your knees and get right with God, and go and forth and give back to your creator for the things that he has given you". &lt;/em&gt;I handed Michael a &lt;em&gt;"You Have the Right to Remain Silent"&lt;/em&gt; tract and give him directions to visit a local church and the name of one of our department chaplains who is a pastor at that church.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Michael said, "&lt;em&gt;Sir, I do believe that God sent you here to me today to talk to me". I have never had another police officer ever talk to me like you did, thank you". &lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;I tried to hurry Michael along because I wanted to go help the other four patrol units and our helicopter go look for this armed robber as I put my car in drive, Michael said, &lt;em&gt;"Sir, can I shake your hand one more time?"&lt;/em&gt; I put my foot on the brake and shook Michael's hand again and he said, "&lt;em&gt;Sir I promise you that I will go and pray and think about you said"&lt;/em&gt;. Michael asked, &lt;em&gt;"how can I reach you?".&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;I told Michael to not worry about trying to reach me that the best gift for me would be for me not to see him out here on the streets anymore and that one day we would see one another in heaven. Michael looked down at the ground and shook his head in acknowledgment. I told Michael that I had to go now, but that I would pray for him and told him &lt;em&gt;"God Bless"&lt;/em&gt; as I drove away. Michael said; &lt;em&gt;"No sir, God bless you".&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;As I pulled out of the business parking lot I turned my patrol car to the north and started to head in the general direction of the armed robbery call that my partner had hurriedly rushed off to. I checked my MDC computer at the call. I noticed that all the patrol units were now cancelled and cleared off the call. I looked at the complaint on the call and it said; "Unknown". Comments by the dispatchers and officers into the CAD call read; "Searched parking lot of any witnesses and victim, no flag down and no witnesses". Dispatchers did make contact with a female caller who stated that she did not want any help, that there was no crime, and did not wish to speak with any police officers". I thought it was something that every officer who reads this blog could appreciate as we have all been there at one time or another (but not all at once) I immediately called this brother officer to tell him "God Bless" and "WOW" What a week! I also thought of some great Bible passage to go along with this post. Please read them and keep them in mind as you read his e-mail which has been edited for content.  Also, this particular Deputy Sheriff does read this blog so feel free to post him a comment of encouragement at the end. &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;James 1:12&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;em&gt;"God blesses the people who patiently endure testing. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him."&lt;/em&gt; &lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;2 Corinthians 12:9&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt; "My grace is&lt;/em&gt; &lt;em&gt;sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness". &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Hebrews 13:5 &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;em&gt;"For God has said, "I will never leave you or abandon you". &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Isaiah 52:12&lt;/strong&gt; "  But you will not leave in haste or go in flight; for the lord will go before you, &lt;strong&gt;the God of Israel will be your rear guard&lt;/strong&gt;. (NIV)&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;Dear Mike,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Glad to hear from you!!  It has been a very rough period for my unit and agency.  The State of Florida voted on a massive tax cut back and our people have been on edge for some time, but I have been trying to keep the positive.  Our agency is a very lean one.  The current sheriff has prided himself on keeping pay at competitive levels and maintaining a strong workforce.  Now with the mandated budget cuts, we are looking to laying off a minimum of 25 sworn and 15 civilian staff.  If the county gets its demanded reduction in our budget (which I cannot see happening) we will lose 104 deputies and 25 civilian staff!!  There has always been a struggle, because as you know Florida Sheriff’s are in charge of their own budget.  My Court Security Section is down 25% staff.  Okay.  This just sets you up for the environment.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Two weeks ago&lt;/strong&gt;, one of my best and brightest deputies, that worked directly for me at one of our satellite court facilities, asked to go home early when his duties were done.  A little while later, he told his wife he was not feeling well and laid down for a nap.  His wife went to wake him up for dinner and he was dead.  This Deputy was only 31 years old and a fantastic guy; however, though I was working on him, he was not a believer, as far as I can tell.  Since his passing, I have heard some disturbing things from some of his friends that leads me to believe he was kind of keeping me humored.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;During this deputy’s funeral&lt;/strong&gt;, I get word that another one of my deputies, had just been taken to the hospital ED for possible cardiac issues.  Turns out he has SIGNIFICANT blockage.  Part of his heart muscle is calcified.  He is still in the hospital and stable.  He has had open heart surgery, but they could not take care of everything and he looks to be out for some time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Another employee I have been having problems with since I got to this unit in July, causing me to activate the progressive discipline program for a number of wild and crazy things not to mention failure to call-in when not showing up for work.  This deputy has been here for 11 years and has used ALL ACCRUED LEAVE TIME.  Then suddenly this Deputy is served with Admin Leave w/Pay (you know what that means).  The following week, we had a felony warrant for this same Deputy on doctor shopping charges where she has fraudulently obtained over 5000 narcotics and other controlled prescriptions.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Then,&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;strong&gt;just last week&lt;/strong&gt;, One more of my brightest and best and the “Radar O’Reilly” of the Court Security Section dies from a massive heart attack while at home.  Danny was 53 years old.  He had arranged for the day off to see his doctor about a messed up shoulder.  He had been on light duty since December.  This guy was fantastic.  He knew where everything was, how to get it, how to get it fixed and what to do with it.  Just a great guy.  He had been with our agency starting as an auxiliary and then to Court Security for 30 years.  This guy had it together.  He definitely was a Christian and he and I had several conversations about Jesus and how He has worked in our lives.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Then comes today,&lt;/strong&gt; Danny’s funeral was today at Noon.  We had 120 jurors coming in, 85 inmates, and because of budget cuts and light duty staff and etc. we barely had enough to cover critical areas.  In fact the Lt. and I were covering those.  I call Patrol for assistance to cover during the funeral.  The judges who could clear their dockets did, but we would still have some inmates and a couple judges that would have to continue.  I was promised three deputies by the Patrol Shift commander.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;About 0930 today&lt;/strong&gt; we get word the construction doing demolition to part of our courthouse had just cut through the elevator power supply and we had jurors stuck on the elevators between floors.  As we are getting them out, my daughter’s school calls and she is sick.  I go down and verify there is no one else stuck in the elevators.  I confirmed, we did a yell to the other elevator and no one answers (you see where this is going).  I go pick up my daughter from school and get back to the office with her &lt;em&gt;(cause it will take too long to get her home before the funeral)&lt;/em&gt;.  Get back and see fire/rescue pulling up.  I ask what’s going on and they say they got a call from a woman on her cellphone that she is stuck on the elevator.  After all the calls to the other elevator, she never answered and she did not use the elevator phone to call for help or ring the bell.  Then, when 9-1-1 gets the call they don’t even call us on the radio to let us know that someone called!!&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We get the lady out and I get my daughter in the car to go over to the funeral.  Just get settled there and the guys I have left at the courthouse (who would not go to the funeral) call me and tell me that now we had a total blackout at the courthouse and that the inmate / holding cell elevator and the judge’s elevators are both stuck.  So, I get back in the car, missing my deputy’s funeral, and head back over to the courthouse.  Oh, and I forgot to mention that the Patrol Shift Commander “forgot” I called him.  When I asked where my relief was about ½ hour before the funeral he said, &lt;em&gt;“Nobody asked me…I don’t know anything about it.”&lt;/em&gt;  He was surprised when I told him that I had called him directly and requested the personnel and was told, &lt;em&gt;“Don’t worry about it.  It is taken care of.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Okay, so how’s your day!!  LOL.  Although I am frustrated and tired of the STUFF going on, I still know God has my back. He asked that I allow other officers to read his e-mail in order to glorify God. Some of the events have been changed.&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Dear Mike,&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Well, I’d like to share a bible verse that assured me that God was with me that day and everyday. I was reading the book of Isaiah and chapter 52:12 caught my attention: But you will not leave in haste or go in flight; for the lord will go before you, the God of Israel will be your rear guard. (NIV) &lt;a name=""&gt;I interpreted this verse as God will never make me retreat in shame but lead me to victory because he’s got my 360. As I moved on to read the remaining chapters in Isaiah, I kept on reading this particular verse.&lt;/a&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;During the incident, things unraveled so fast that I had no time to think but react to the situation at hand. As I entered the store, I announced my presence and the Masked Bandit, without hesitation, ran toward me with his butcher knive at the ready. The rest is history.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;After the incident, I kept on thinking about the what-ifs: What if my gun had jammed; what if I hesitated, what if he had a gun instead of a knife. The most likely answer to all the above questions is that at least I would be stabbed on my left collar bone with an approx. 8 inch blade.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;While I was reading the Bible, I read Isaiah 52:12 again. Then, I realized that God was covering my 360 and nothing else would have happened. Everything that happened was in my favor. I can’t explain anymore how God had protected me that day, but if God was with you, you’d know, too. I guess it was foolish that I even thought about the what-ifs and probably says a lot about my faith in him.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Some people in the office call me a hero, but I’m not. I’m just glad that it’s over. God is the hero and may all the glory go to him. Just remember, David killed Goliath with 1 stone. If God can make a young teenage boy took down a giant, nothing is impossible for him. I came home and opened this e-mail and could sense God's message to me, saying; &lt;em&gt;"good job, well done my good and faithful servant, keep it up".&lt;/em&gt; I have printed this out and have placed it where I can read it whenever I start feeling sorry for my self. I now live by faith,depend on His presence,walk by patience,am uplifted by prayer,and labor with power. &lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;strong&gt;That's what it means to be a &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1"&gt;disciple&lt;/span&gt; of Jesus"!!&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;(A national pastor who was later martyred in Zimbabwe Africa)&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It is always interesting to look at our respective careers both while in the midst or at others who have retired. When we are on the job we too often focus on the rank, the position and the resources under our control. It seems that we also attribute (as do the public) our rank as decidedly marked to our abilities. How many of us and the public have looked at the 50 year old front desk guy as a performer or wonder why they don’t just retire and how did they even get hired? In reality some of the best cops I know are the lifelong Constables who never strove for promotion, never wanted glory and day in/day out performed their duties simply to make a difference.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;We all started out this career wanting to make a difference, to change lives or to help someone but somewhere, somehow along the way may have lost sight of the bigger picture. Rank, honours, accolades don’t matter at all in the scope of eternity yet we all at some point strive for it. What matters is that where you are and what you are doing is where He wants you to be and intends to use you.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;If you are feeling down, wondering why that promotion passed you by or what is in store for you wonder no more; God has something bigger and better in store as He is in control of it all. Two years ago I wondered why a job which seemed perfect &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2"&gt;didn&lt;/span&gt;’t come through. Now I know the answer: a promotion this fall was named only weeks after the passing of my wife which also meant that I &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3"&gt;didn&lt;/span&gt;’t have to move the kids, had staffing off my back for at least 2 years, &lt;span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_4"&gt;didn&lt;/span&gt;’t have to move offices and amazingly enough, it was better that “that perfect job” two years ago. Maybe, it was God's plan that it was time now to release this specifically for some officer who may find themselves in this same situation. &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;At 0230 this morning while, helping another Deputy with an arrest of a driver for a suspended drivers license who was intoxicated, I conducted a field interview card (FIC) on the drivers two passengers, who just happened to be two local prostitutes. As always, I sort of set up the conversation with a warm up by asking "&lt;em&gt;What demons are you fighting",&lt;/em&gt; and "&lt;em&gt;You know this kind of life is not the life that you need to be living"&lt;/em&gt;. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;At the part of the FIC where I ask, if you have any "scars, marks, or tattoos" one of the prostitutes who I will call "Beth" said that she had a "cross" on a hand. I told her that it was ironic that she had a cross on her hand because the man who died on that cross is the only person who could free you from all your issues. Beth told me very sternly that &lt;em&gt;"God is not a judgemental God you just remember that! "&lt;/em&gt;. I immediately snapped back, &lt;em&gt;"No, that is where you are wrong, He is the Ultimate Judge".&lt;/em&gt; I went on to say, "However, you have created a god in your mind that is not judgemental". She shook her head in silence but didn't say anything and began to whimper. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;The second prostitute didn't say anything at all and seemed to ignoring this conversation. Beth then asked me if I had ever heard of Odnism. I told her &lt;em&gt;"no, what is it?"&lt;/em&gt; (but really had), she told me &lt;em&gt;"I should look it up".&lt;/em&gt; Again, I asked her to tell me what Odnism was and she then admitted that she did not know but that her son follows it. I finished up and handed both the prostitutes the "&lt;em&gt;You Have the Right to Remain Silent"&lt;/em&gt; tract At the same time as I handed the tract to Beth I said to her, &lt;em&gt;"I know Odnism and it is not of God it is much about fairy tale god's and goddesses and has nothing to do with the one real God who WILL Judge both you and me".&lt;/em&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;As I finished up one last radio check I saw Beth began to read the tract that I had just gave her and she started crying. I told her to go read the tract and know that I will be praying for her. Beth and the other prostitute walked away holding the tract. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;I did not have the time to take them through the "Good Person Test" or I would have (I have it as a link on my website) there was just to much going on with my Sergeant, a Tow Truck Driver, and two other Deputies, not to mention a busy radio. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;But, I have seen both prostitutes in the past, and plan on following up with them if I see them again. It is my sincere prayer that I don't see either one again. If you have been in law enforcement longer than 30 days you will know that 911 disconnects can be anything from a child playing on the telephone to a murder in progress. Whenever, I get one of these calls, being as tactically sound as I can, I approach the residence from a distance and on the walk-up listen for anything that may provide a clue as to what is going on inside the residence that resulted in 911 being called. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;This night was no different. As I approached the front door I heard a female in a verbal argument with a male. As I rang the doorbell, I heard the male voice say; &lt;em&gt;"Oh, great! Now you've done it the cops are here".&lt;/em&gt; Little did this man know that due to recent budget cutbacks there were no &lt;em&gt;"cops&lt;/em&gt;" it was only "&lt;em&gt;a cop&lt;/em&gt;" but I was carrying the best back-up partner ever.....AMEN! &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;The man opened the door and invited me into their beautifully furnished, but older home. I asked the standard cop questions such as "how many people are in the residence?", "was there any physical altercation or was it verbal only?" you folks know the lingo here. Anyways, I had a very calm sense about this call and did not panic. I listened to their complaints and found out very quickly that this was one of the &lt;em&gt;"Dear Mike, I'm sending you to help these people, Thanks God"&lt;/em&gt; type calls. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Now before you think that I've totally lost it and to be completely fair about it. I don't always have this kind of sense about all calls. Believe me, I am just as quick to "hook a crook" as anyone but this wasn't the case. This was one of those "I called 911 because I needed to talk to someone as a couple call". The whole reason that 911 was called in the first place was a verbal argument over the lost of income and of these newly married couple's standard of living. You see the husband worked as a mortage broker and if you have watched CNN, FOX, etc. in the last 10 days you can probably figure out that the mortage broker business is not the best right now. Life was good when he was bringing in 100K a year, and his wife was his 'stay at home' assistance but now funds are tight and the wife needed to get a job outside of the home and it was causing stress upon the marriage. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I listened and found out they both had once been involved in Church. I asked them if they had a "spiritual advisor", "Pastor", "Priest" or "Chaplain" that they could turn too in these difficult times. They both said "no". I told them that I had discovered in my personal life, that having some type of a firm spiritual foundation was critical to marriage survival and that money was not the reason that a marriage should be split over. By now, both spouses had calmed way down and they both had a general concern for each other's welfare and the bottom line, was lack of communication. You see, she felt bad that his ego was bruised and he felt bad that she had to go get a job to help pay the family bills. i, working with God, only brought out the words needed to help bring peace to the home. The female asked me where I worshiped and I told her. They both thanked me for coming and realized that they had just been stupid over the argument. I spent nearly 45 minutes at the home talking to this couple and believe me I believe it was well worth it! But here is something that I believe that this couple did not know. That in our society we misunderstand what it means to be "rich". You can have a lot of power, money, fame, and yet be poor because you lack the one thing in life that can make you rich. That is having a Godly purpose to live for. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Tonight's call did two things; it grounded me spiritually and reminded me that God has placed me right where he wants me. Second it got me to write again. If you have ever heard of "writers block" I get it about every week.....LOL! Tonight's call prompted me to write again for the first time in well over a month. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Tonight's call also caused me to reflect on just how much money is a HUGE issue with today's law enforcement officers. Investments, 401K, stockmarkets woes, mortgage short-falls, etc. With all the money issues and concerns that is going on in today's society, I begin to wonder just how many "Domestic Disturbance" calls that officer's throughout North America were handling right now. I thought about money being satan's folly. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;As I reflected on just how much money has impacted my own life. I remember, growing up as a kid in the 1970's (now, you will see my age here). My parents scraped up enough money to pay $15.00 for top-priced ticket to my first ever concert to see none other than Elvis Presley, the King of Rock-n-Roll. (I hoped it would have been KISS) I remember vivdly reaching my hand down from the baclony of the Lakeland (FL) Civic Center to try and grab one of Elvis' scarves that he was tossing to the audience members behind the stage. I never got a scarf, but instead Elvis grabbed my outreached hand and shook it instead. I thought that was cool. After that night, I wanted to be like Elvis and wear a jewled studded suit, with diamond rings on my hand and gold chains around my neck, and ride in Limos. Elvis was the king of "bling" before there was even the word "bling". &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;It wasn't until years after Elvis' death while watching an eposide of CNN talk show "Larry King"who was interviewing Elvis' ex-wife, Priscilla Presley, when I heard something that I had never thought about before. Priscilla told Larry King that &lt;em&gt;"Elvis did not know who he was ment to be and what his purpose in life was all about. "&lt;/em&gt; Priscilla went on to say that &lt;em&gt;"Elvis thought about helping people, maybe becoming a doctor or a police officer but instead went on stage night after night and was a loney and unfullfilled person". &lt;/em&gt;Here was a guy that by all standards lived the life of Riley. He had everything that money could buy and yet he was a unhappy and loney man and died as such. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;So, here is the lesson to all of us LEO's out there who may be working tons of overtime to help pay for the toys of life that you feel you need in order to keep up with "the Jones". You may be spending your weekends workings and not with your family in church all the way justifying ever bit of it. However, Money is not everything, in fact money is nothing. Money is something that God has entusted you to. Afterall it was He, not you, that allowed you to have your job, your promotion, and your money. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;It doesn't matter how much you have, or how little you have, if you don't understand your Godly purpose to live by, you will be (spiritually) poor and die a loney unfullfilled person. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I believe it is my purpose to give officer's insight into calls for service that I respond to in which I believe that God's purpose can work through me (and you) in order to make a difference in the lives of the people with whom you encounter on your beat.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;You see, I've had the opportunity to touch the hands of two Kings. One of earthly wealth, who died a loney and unfullfilled person. And one who is a heavenly King of all Kings, who walks besides me everyday, who gives me purpose, and fullfillment, and someone who I will be able to spend enterity with. Contry to popular opinion, the vast marjority of the residents are hard-working descent God fearing people. However, there is also an evil dark side as well. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Recently, I had a young gentleman on a bicycle who often acts as a lookout for drug dealers yell at me as I drove by. This wasn’t the first time that he has yelled at me and each time I have never said or did anything different, I only ignored him and kept on driving by. But this time, as I drove by him only some 5 feet away, he looked directly at me and yelled a very personal statement, he said; &lt;em&gt;"Go Home!"&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;But this time something was different, I felt the spirit of the Lord calling me to stop. So, I did. I put my patrol vehicle in reverse and starting backing up to him. He turned and looked away in the other direction and began to ride away on his bicycle. I asked him; "&lt;em&gt;What, you don’t like the Police?&lt;/em&gt;" He firmly stated, &lt;em&gt;"No&lt;/em&gt;!" we looked at each other 'eye to eye' for a moment and I asked him directly what was on my heart. I said; "&lt;em&gt;Do you have the joy of the Lord in your heart?"&lt;/em&gt; He stopped and looked directly at me with a confused look. I quickly followed that question up with another and I asked him, "&lt;em&gt;Do you read the Bible?"&lt;/em&gt; He stated very proudly "&lt;em&gt;Yes, I do&lt;/em&gt;"! I asked, &lt;em&gt;"well, that's good, have you ever read Romans 13 verses 1-5"?&lt;/em&gt; By now, this young man's angry face had disapeared and he now had a slight smile coming from his mouth. He replied; &lt;em&gt;"No, what was that verse again?". &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;I gave him the very short layman's version of the verse, and explained that according to the Bible, policeman are servants of the Lord and we are here to do you good and not harm, so have no fear if you are not doing wrong". The young man rode his bicycle closer to my patrol vehicle and said;&lt;em&gt; "I’ve never had an officer talk about the Bible to me before, I want you to know that I respect you sir".&lt;/em&gt; I handed him a gospel track that Chaplain Tony Miano wrote entitled; &lt;strong&gt;"You Have the Right to Remain Silent"&lt;/strong&gt;. Before we parted, I told him to read the track and to think about what is written in it. I reminded him to go home and to read his Bible verse on Romans 13 and not to forget that policeman are God’s angels here on earth for some very difficult times. The man agreed stating; &lt;em&gt;"I know that’s right!".&lt;/em&gt; Before I drove off I told the young man &lt;em&gt;"May God Bless You&lt;/em&gt;". The man replied, &lt;em&gt;"May God Bless You Sir".&lt;/em&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Did I make a difference in this young man’s life? Only God knows. I know that I will be looking for him again and quite honestly I hope that I never see him again until that day we meet on heavens side. But until then, have you ever driven by someone like this young man? Have you stopped to think that although this person who is calling you names, maybe is actually calling out to you for help, spiritual help? &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Can you image the difference that police officers can make in their cities by witnessing to folks just like this young man. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;John Dawson in his 1989 book entitled; &lt;strong&gt;"Taking Our Cities For God"&lt;/strong&gt; writes; &lt;em&gt;" Our new vision of Christian missions must focus on cities. Well, I must confess that my time is always borrowed time, and the inspiration comes from two sources. First, from God through the saving grace that He has given us. Second, from police officers just like you. The following is one example of this inspiration. Recently, I received an e-mail from an officer who wrote the following statement;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;“I want to be a role model for Christ, as I have for so long been a role player. I want to lead by example and show others how God has and continues to work in my life.”&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This officer’s simple but true statement touched me and I began to wonder just how many of us are performing as a “role player” versus being a “role model” for Christ? And the second part of that sentence is “what can I do to show others how God has worked in my life?”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;There is no doubt that police officer’s are surrounded by evil. Without having a firm and strong spiritual foundation rooted in Jesus Christ we will never achieve the success that God has in store for us. One example of this evil is foul language. As officer’s we have all heard it and many of us (myself included) have been guilty of participating in it. But did you know that the Bible, which is God’s word, speaks directly against using foul language in many different passages. Here are just a few.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Ephesians 4:29 states;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;“Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen” &lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;Colossians 3:8 states;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;“But now you must put away anger, fury, malice, slander, and obscene language out of your mouths.”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To knowingly use foul language is a sin that is; it is going against God’s word. The Bible tells us in 1 Corinthians 10:13; &lt;em&gt;“God is faithful. He will keep the temptation from becoming so strong that you can’t stand up against it and when you are tempted, he will show you a way out so that you will not give in to it”.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;If you want to be a role player for Christ, then you should continue to use foul language and telling crude jokes and keep fitting in with your peers. Don’t let anyone know about the “hope that is in you”&lt;/em&gt; 1st Peter 3:15.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;To be a role model for Christ is different. Romans 12:2 states:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;em&gt;“And do not be conformed to this world, &lt;strong&gt;but be transformed&lt;/strong&gt; by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.”&lt;/em&gt; To be a role model for Christ and means to &lt;em&gt;“let your light shine”&lt;/em&gt; as we are instructed in Matthew 5:16 to do.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;So, make your decision today and let others know that you are a not simply a “role player” for Christ but rather a “role model”. Be the example to show others that God expects us to be. Let others know just how God is working in your life and how much you desire for them to be a part of “the hope that is in you”. Always remember what Romans 6:13 says &lt;em&gt;“Surrender your whole being to Him to be used for righteous purposes”&lt;/em&gt;. A follow-up to the PeaceKeeper's Bible study.&lt;span&gt;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;em&gt;&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;All of us in law enforcement know what it is like to be dispatched to calls for service. For my first 15 years on the job I was stressed out, depressed, and frustrated about the calls for service that I went on. I was a constant complainer about the lack of support that I was not getting in the "back-up" that I needed to accomplish my job. In fact, I am sure that there are more than a few of you reading this article that may feel the same way that I did. If so, it may because you aren't policing with Christ as your back-up partner. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;First Responder For God&lt;/strong&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Police officers are in a very unique position to reach the lost as what I call "first responders for God". Just like a trained medical personnel are called first responders because they are the ones that medically treat a patient before the physician will ever see them. In essence they are "planting the seeds" of their medical treatment to allow the physician to promote a speeder and a healthier recovery. As a police officer, you are responding to immediate needs of the lost. You are the first responders to see people who have lost their "free will" and instead have allowed the Demons of alcohol, Crack, Meth, Cannabis, and prescription drugs to rule their life. You see the dissolving of the family unit because of these "demons" of addictions. You see the stolen property, burglaries, and prostitution that are fueled because of these addictions. And whether you like it or not, you are on the front lines of a true battle of "Spiritual Warfare". between good and evil, and a battle in which you see Satan laughing at it all. What I'm asking for, in essence is for you to begin using the principles and teachings of Jesus Christ as found in the Bible to help lead "the lost" who you encounter to a life with Christ. In short, your police beat should now become your mission field. You don't need to go to China, Turkey, or any other foreign country to preach the gospel but you can preach and lead, not only your fellow officers to a life with Christ but plant the seeds of salvation for the citizens whom call you for help. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Taking Your City For God&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Ephesians 4:27 (New International Version) &lt;em&gt;"and do not give the devil a foothold"&lt;/em&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt; &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Are you praying for your city and your government leaders? As you are driving your patrol beat, are you praying for your crack houses and bars? Are you praying for the house where you were at 3 times this week for domestics? If not, you're missing out on a large part of what we as Christians DO NOT do and that is PRAY. We have no problem going to God and ask him to help us out with our personal troubles, and even to thank him for the blessings that he has bestowed upon you. But if you are not praying for your "crooks" then who is? &lt;/div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;In the community that I patrol there are 14 churches and on Sunday most of them are closed because they are afraid to open. So, who is praying for the drug dealers, the prostitutes, and the other spiritual strongholds? It is me. What about in your community?
